'SERIOUSLY DISTURBING'

This Morning viewers left in ‘tears’ and ‘feeling physically sick’ over footage of vile abuse in care home

The ITV programme aired footage of ex-carer Maurice Campbell abusing an elderly dementia sufferer

THIS Morning viewers were left in tears and "feeling physically sick" after the ITV show aired footage of abuse secretly filmed in a care home.

Yesterday nasty Maurice Campbell, 56, was jailed for two years and four months after he was caught abusing an elderly dementia sufferer as his wife looked on.

CCTV footage showed him slapping Dora Melton’s head and twisting her wrists and fingers.

Before airing it, Holly Willoughby warned that it "contained scenes some viewers might find disturbing".

Afterwards both Holly and Phillip Schofield looked upset by footage, with Phil describing it as "horrifying".

The video left viewers crying, almost throwing up after being so disturbed by what they had seen.

One viewer tweeted: "The carer abusing a dementia sufferer makes me sick. I just want to bring my great aunty (sic) back home and look after her myself".

Another commented: "Just burst into tears whatching (sic) #ThisMorning."

A viewer wrote: "Omg absolutely shocking footage... #ThisMorning abuse in elderly care home... so sickening i mean made me physically feel sick."

One commented: "Seeing video footage of carers abusing elderly people in care homes is making me feel sick ."

They then posed the question as to whether there is a growing abuse problem in our care system.

Former careworker Eileen Chubb spoke on This Morning about the abuse she herself had witnessed.

Eileen said that she was "not surprised" by the footage and that it was the "tip of the iceburg".

She was a whistleblower and revealed that this year alone she had been contacted by 4,000 staff and 1,000 concerned family members about care home abuse.

Eileen said that there were, of course, good staff but that people were losing their jobs for speaking out about abuse.

She is currently campaigning Edna's Law to identify abusers by listening to whistleblowers.

One viewer revealed that they had been in the same position as Eileen: "the abuse of the eldery (sic) in care homes and by carers is vile. i used to be a carer but whistle blowed and chose to leave my job".

They added: "there was a lot of stuff going on and i couldn't stand by and let it happen, and having called it out i didn't feel safe in my job anymore".

Others called for CCTV cameras to be put up in care homes.

A Twitter user commented: "#ThisMorning abuse in care homes...put f***in cameras up simple."

Another agreed: "Vile animals!!! That footage has turned my stomach, these poor vulnerable people ... CCTV should be installed in ALL rooms!! #ThisMorning".
