Mathews, 57, was charged with drink-driving after she allegedly smashed her yellow Jeep into a grey Ford Kuga on Friday night.
The mum-of-one was breathalysed following the incident just minutes after attending an event promoting her new book.
It's understood the owner of the Ford reported her to police.
Sources told The Sun she was screaming as cops handcuffed her at the scene in Newquay, Cornwall.
One witness said Mathews threw herself to the ground during the arrest and yelled at cops: "Why are you ruining my life?"

Donning a white shirt a denim shorts she was dragged into the van accompanied by four police officers.
A patrol car was also called to the chaos.
The former music exec reportedly spent the night in a cell at Bodmin police station.
She was out by Saturday evening, when she shared a pic of a group of women captioned: “About yesterday.”

Mathews had been promoting her book about the menopause, called The New Hot at Teylu Trading, a homeware shop near to the crash scene.
The event was scheduled from 5pm to 9pm with officers arriving to the scene just 20 minutes later.
When approached by The Sun about the incident, she said: “No comment.”
Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Police were called at 9.20pm on Friday following reports of a two-vehicle collision in Newquay.
“One person was arrested in connection to this matter.
“Following police enquiries, one person has since been charged.”
She is now due to appear at Bodmin Magistrates' Court on July 28.
Mathews married Noel, 56, in Las Vegas in 1997.
They split in 2001 after having daughter Anaïs, 23.
