Children's author and telly star David, 45, jokes he'll be "lonely" this Christmas and confesses of Australian pop star Kylie: “I’ve loved her from afar for many years and I will always love her.

"I have tried a little bit but it didn’t work at all, she weren’t having it. You can’t blame her though can you!"

He added that he'd never asked her on a date directly, but he'd tried to set something up through other people, only Kylie wasn't interested.

Kylie explained: “We have lots of mutual friends so dinners with people in abundance.”

In his first sit-down TV interview since news broke, he explains: "Obviously it came down to, my job was still there and I didn’t want to lose my job. I love doing what I do.

"At the end of the day, I’m a baker by trade, that’s all I am and I want to carry on doing my job and I didn’t think that was a bad thing to do.”

He adds of fellow judge Mary Berry and hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, who have all left the show: "[Mary] will always be my TV mother as well as Mel and Sue will be my sisters. We are like a dysfunctional family.”

Paul continued: "Ultimately when I told Mary I was going to stay with the show, she said ‘Listen, if I was your age, I would do exactly the same thing'."

Paul also talks about how he once dressed up as Santa Claus for his son Josh, but the clever youngster grew suspicious when he noticed Santa's "Scouse" accent.
