The night started with her classic sketch series Victoria Wood As Seen On TV, which also starred Julie Walters – who she had been friends with since they met as teenagers at Manchester Polytechnic’s student theatre - and Celia Imrie.

The two actresses also shared their memories of their friend, which left many fans feeling rather emotional.

And another added: “#VictoriaWood tribute was so beautiful and fitting. Celia Imrie and Julie Walters's reactions at the end made me cry. Forever the best.”

BBC Two then played a show called The Best of British which looked back over her career before airing Victoria Wood’s Midlife Christmas, which was first broadcast on Christmas Eve 2009.

It then played her live show At It Again, which was filmed at the Royal Albert Hall in 2001.

And fans posted on Twitter throughout the night as they remembered their comedy idol.

One wrote: “What an exceptionally talented lady I hope #VictoriaWood loved ones get some comfort from how much people admire and miss her,” while another added: “Even though she is no longer with us, she continues to make us smile and laugh! The magic that was #Victoria Wood!”

One fan contributed, “#VictoriaWood night on BBC2 making me laugh and breaking my heart at the same time. We miss you so much...” and another said: “I hate living in a world that no longer has #VictoriaWood in it. Still hard to believe she's gone. A genius.”
