Melvin, 36, exclusively told The Sun: “Is it a dream? This happened? Strictly can’t have this back you know!
“I actually can’t believe it! I can’t believe it. I was happy with our scores alone, so to come here and win is mind-blowing.”
In stark contrast to his losing status from this year's normal show, Melvin managed to bag a perfect 40 after recreating the Will Ferrell film Elf for his Charleston routine.
His dance partner Janette Manrara told us: “He worked so hard. He put in so many hours. We were stood there and we were like you know what, no matter what happens, we felt good, we smashed the routine and got a 40.
“I couldn’t be happier for Melvin.”
After hearing he'd won, Melvin was joined by his castmates from both the normal show and special to be held up in the air in celebration following his victory.
Fans of the show threatened to have their Christmas viewing spoiled after an online site leaked the results shortly after the show was aired - giving away the scores as well as the eventual winner.
But luckily everyone involved was in the festive spirit and the show saw Ainsley Harriott, Frankie Bridge, Pamela Stephenson, Gethin Jones and Denise Richards return to the dancefloor for one last spin.
In an exclusive interview with The Sun Online back at the beginning of December, revealed: "The Christmas special is in the can, there might be some other little bits and pieces and little bits of filming to do but I’m very excited.
"Fabulous dances, absolutely fabulous dances, great entertainment and we’ve also been able to do some fantastic work with Mind, one of the charities.
"So you know, it ticks a lot of boxes when you get associated with that. It’s a bit of fun but it’s a bit of caring about others at the same time.
"If you’re only looking for Ainsley I’m the first one to dance so that’ll be a treat– and I get a ten from Len! There you go!"
He performed Rocking Around the Christmas tree dressed as a burglar with Karen Clifton to celebrate the classic film Home Alone, Gethin and Chloe Hewitt did a Polar Express themed Quickstep, while Frankie Bridge and Gorka wowed with a Frozen themed American Smooth to Let It Go.
Pamela Stephenson and Pasha Kovalev Cha Cha'ed to Girls Aloud song Jump from Love Actually and Denise Lewis and Anton Du Beke performed a Viennese Waltz inspired by Meet Me In St Louis.
