The second part of the Christmas special was the baking show’s final farewell

GREAT British Bake Off fans were left bereft tonight as the last ever episode of the show aired on the BBC.

The Boxing Day episode was also the very last time the GBBO will be on the BBC

And those who have been devoted fans for the last six years took to their Twitter pages to share their upset and devastation that the show they had come to know and love, is no more.

One wrote: “When you realise you're watching the last GBBO on BBC with Mary, Mel & Sue,” while another added: “It's the last proper Bake Off. A lot of gin will get me through this.”

One upset fan said, "It's just hit me that this is the absolute last ever Bake Off on BBC. I am not OK", while an equally devastated viewers added: "Never gonna hear "On your marks, get set, BAKE!!!!" From Mel and Sue again."

One appeared to have a dig at Channel 4 as they wrote: "So sad this is the last #GBBO in it's original format & place. Won't be the same without the gang & with ads!"

And another fan agreed and added: "Imagine this but without Mary, Mel and Sue. And with adverts."

The show was sold earlier this year to Channel 4 but only judge Paul Hollywood signed on for the move, with Mel Giedroyc, Sue Perkins and Mary Berry turning it down.

Fans were also left in tears at the end of tonight's final show as the programme said its last farewell to the BBC with a goodbye montage.

The last ever episode of the hugely-popular baking show aired on Boxing Day night, the second half of the Christmas special.

Having already been warned to stick around and wait until the end credits has rolled, fans were glued.

Then, a shot of the famous tent flashed up as Dean Martin’s Memories Are Made of This began to play.

The minute-long clip then showed some of the best bits from the show – including a couple of innuendos.
