mary's sherlock shock

Sherlock star Martin Freeman found heartbreaking scenes with real life ex-girlfriend Amanda Abbington ‘a walk in the park’

Martin's co-star Benedict Cumberbatch opens up about last night's dramatic episode

SHERLOCK fans were left distraught after Mary Watson was killed off in last night’s dramatic series opener.

You might think the scenes – in which Mary was shot while trying to save Sherlock – would be tough going for screen hubby MARTIN FREEMAN to film.

Mary is played by Martin’s real-life ex AMANDA ABBINGTON.

Their 16-year relationship came to an end shortly before filming for the new series began earlier this year.

But according to the duo’s co-star BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH, the scene was no bother at all.

Benedict said: “I don’t think it was at all emotional for Martin. A walk in the park.”

Amanda herself said it was “really fun” to film her own death.

She added: “You can be completely self-indulgent and go to town on it . . . and I probably did a bit.”

Co-creator STEVEN MOFFAT admitted it was purposefully written into the first episode to surprise those who know ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE’s original stories.

Steven said: “Mary’s been dead for 100 years, so it’s hard to surprise people in those circumstances.

“The only thing we could do was do it earlier than people thought, so it would happen as wrenchingly and as horrifically as such things happen in real life.”

I’d say it’s mission accomplished.
