When is Call the Midwife on BBC 1 tonight and who’s in the season 8 finale cast?

CALL the Midwife, the hugely popular BBC series, is set to wind down its eighth season.

When is Call the Midwife on TV?

The eighth season of Call the Midwife finishes up TONIGHT (Sunday, March 3) at 8pm on BBC One.

It airsat the same time as Top Gear on BBC Two, as well as clashing with the Endeavour season 6 finale on ITV.

The series featured eight hour-long episodes and has been shown at the same time each week.

What is Call the Midwife about? What happens in series 8?

Call the Midwife is a BBC drama series about a group of midwives working in the east end of London in the 1950s and 1960s.

They are based at the fictional nursing convent Nonnatus House in Poplar district carrying out nursing and midwife duties.

The show is based on the memoirs of the same name by Jennifer Worth.

Series 8 sees the return of Nurse Trixie (Helen George) who left Poplar to live in Italy as she battled her alcoholism.

This new series will also welcome FOUR new cast members including Harry Potter star Miriam Margolyes.

She is joined by Fenella Woolgar, who plays Sister Hilda, Ella Bruccoleri as postulant Sister Frances and Georgie Glen as Miss Higgins, the surgery’s new receptionist.

Who’s in the cast of Call the Midwife?

The team behind the BBC One ratings giant have banned Miranda Hart from rejoining the cast after she let them down at the last minute last year.

Jenny Agutter plays Sister Julienne

Jenny is a veteran British actress of stage and screen and is best known for her roles as Roberta in the 1970 film The Railway Children, Jessica 6 in Logan’s Run and Nurse Alex Price in An American Werewolf in London.

In recent years she has starred as Tessa Phillips in the BBC spy drama series Spooks and Councilwoman Hawley in The Avengers and Captain America: Winter Soldier.

Linda Bassett plays Nurse Phyllis Crane

Linda’s television credits include Lark Rise to Candleford and Grandma’s House and she starred as downtrodden wife Ella Khan in the film East is East.

Helen George plays Nurse Beatrix ‘Trixie’ Franklin

A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, Helen is best known for her role as the glamorous midwife.

She took part in the thirteenth series of Strictly Come Dancing, was paired with Aljaz Skorjanec and finished in sixth place.

Cliff Parisi plays Fred Buckle

Cliff is best known for his role as Minty Peterson in EastEnders, which he played from 2002 to 2010.

Stephen McGann plays Dr Patrick Turner

Stephen is one of a family of acting brothers including Joe, Paul and Mark and starred as Sean Reynolds in Emmerdale from 1999 to 2002.

A veteran of the stage, he has starred in productions including Blood Brothers, Art and Footloose.

He is married to Call The Midwife writer Heidi Thomas.
