La La Land equals Titanic’s record with a staggering FOURTEEN Oscar nominations as the full line up of the 2017 Academy Awards are revealed

HIT musical La La Land is set to dominate next month’s Oscars after bagging a record-equalling 14 nominations.

The film is favourite to win Best Picture, while its leading stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are up for Best Actor and Best Actress.

IT'S MUSICAL TO MY EARS

BY DAN WOOTTON, BIZARRE EDITOR

Finally, a mainstream blockbuster which makes you leave the cinema with a smile on your face is set for total Oscars domination. La La Land is a joyous, original and thought-provoking musical that harks back to a golden age of Hollywood, where entertainment and performance meant everything. Lion – Brit star and Best Supporting Actor nominee Dev Patel’s coming-of-age movie – also deserves a look-in. But for the first time since 2003, when Chicago won Best Picture, I predict it’s going to be an all-singing, all-dancing Academy Awards. Rightly so.

Only two other movies have bagged 14 Academy Award nominations — Titanic in 1997 and 1950 drama All About Eve.

Yesterday, Emma, 28, said the recognition was “beyond any of our wildest imaginings” and added: “It’s hopefully bringing a kick in their step to those who watch it.”

Damien Chazelle is up for Best Director for the musical, while it is also in contention to win production prizes including screenplay and costume design.

Audition and City of Stars, from the soundtrack, have been nominated for Best Original Song.

Damien, 32, said of matching All About Eve and Titanic’s record: “When you mention those movies, it makes my head spin even more than it’s spinning. I’m a little speechless.”

The movie — a modern, romantic musical about an actress trying to make it in Hollywood — faces competition from drama Moonlight and sci-fi flick Arrival, which are each up for eight gongs.

Manchester By The Sea, Lion and a resurgent Mel Gibson’s World War Two epic Hacksaw Ridge are up for six each.

There was bad news for Brit actor Hugh Grant, 56, whose role in Florence Foster Jenkins was expected to get him his first Oscar nod. He was left out of the running for Best Actor.

Leading that race is Manchester By The Sea star Casey Affleck, 41, although he is up against man-of-the-moment Ryan, 36.

Emma Stone is favourite for Best Actress but has a rival in Meryl Streep, 67.

Her turn as wannabe opera singer Florence Foster Jenkins takes her to 20 career Oscar nominations.

It comes following US President Donald Trump branding her “over-rated” after she criticised him at the Golden Globes earlier this month.

There were shock snubs for Arrival actress Amy Adams, 42, and Clint Eastwood’s plane crash flick Sully, starring Tom Hanks, 60, which was recognised only for Sound Editing.

The 89th Academy Awards take place at LA’s Dolby Theatre on February 26, hosted by US chat show star Jimmy Kimmel.

THE RACE IS BACK ON

THIS year’s nominations are notably more diverse following past controversy over race.

Will Smith was among the stars who boycotted last year’s ceremony after all nominees were white for the second year running, prompting the #OscarsSoWhite protest campaign. But there will be few complaints this time, with seven non-white nominees in the main categories, including Denzel Washington, Naomie Harris and Dev Patel. Two-time winner Denzel, 62, who last won for Training Day in 2002, is up for Best Actor for Fences. Moonlight leads the charge for diversity with nominations for Naomie, lead star Mahershala Ali, 42, director Barry Jenkins, 37, and nods for Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay.

O-Brit-erate 'em

Britain's “special relationship” with the US could be in ruins after the Oscars.

Several of our hottest stars have the chance to beat their American rivals to awards glory and bring home a gong from next month’s LA bash.

Naomie Harris, 40, has bagged her first ever Academy nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as a drug addict in Moonlight.

Overwhelmed by her selection, Naomie, said: “I am over the moon. I really cannot believe it.

“I heard the news from my brother. I was too terrified to listen to the live nominations.”

Dev Patel is up for Best Supporting Actor for Lion, in which he stars alongside Nicole Kidman.

The 26-year-old, who shot to fame on Channel 4 drama Skins, said: “I am just floating in the clouds right now.

“I’ve got to say it is really magical and I am sharing it on a film set with my crew in Bombay, it is really beautiful. It is a good feeling.”

Andrew Garfield, 33, best known as Spider-Man, follows up his Bafta and Golden Globes nominations with an inclusion in the Best Actor category for his role in Hacksaw Ridge.

Irish-Ethiopian actress Ruth Negga, 35, who was raised in Limerick, is also up for Best Actress for Loving.
