BAH BREXIT!

Eurovision hopeful Lucie Jones shrugs off naysayers who claim the UK will score nil points because of Brexit

LUCIE Jones has made it clear she’s got no time for the speculation that Brexit will further dampen the UK’s chances at winning The Eurovision Song Contest.

Political voting has long been cited as a reason British acts wrack up a lot of nil points, and with tensions between the UK and the European Union at boiling point because of Brexit, some Eurovision fans believe this could be our worst year yet.

However Lucie Jones – who was selected by the public to represent the UK in the Ukraine later in May – has admitted she’s not letting it cloud her mind.

Appearing on BBC Breakfast on Monday morning, Lucie was asked whether Brexit would make her Eurovision experience worse.

She replied: “We always talk about this political voting. This year, I’m looking forward to going to be part of an event that is globally unifying.

“Eurovision is all about unity and what a great year to be an ambassador for our country, I’ll deal with it when I get there.”

The 25-year-old admitted she had her sights set on victory, adding: “It would be pointless if I went there and I wasn’t trying to win.

“I’ll do what I can to try and make the UK proud.”

Lucie won Eurovision: You Decide with her song Never Give Up On You, which was penned by former Eurovision champ Emmelie de Forest and Lawrie Martin.

The Welsh singer appeared in series six of The X Factor in 2009 where she performed Footprints In The Sand, How Will I Know and Sweet Child o’ Mine, among others.

In week five, Jones faced Celebrity Big Brother stars Jedward – who themselves went on to perform at Eurovision, representing Ireland in 2012 – in a bottom-two sing-off.

After the judges’ vote was deadlocked, the Welsh singer was eliminated as the act with the fewest public votes.

Following her stint on the ITV singing competition, Lucie appeared as Victoria in the musical version of American Psycho in the West End, Elle Woods in the stage production of Legally Blonde and toured China with Ghost: The Musical.

She is engaged to Ethan Boroian, who she first met at X Factor Bootcamp.
