PHILLIP Schofield and Holly Willoughby have called for Britain's leading heart surgeon Dr Stephen Westaby to be given a knighthood after discussing his incredible career on Thursday.
The respected cardiac surgeon was on This Morning to discuss his amazing work, in which he has helped 11,000 patients in the space of 35 years, as documented in his new book Fragile Lives.
The doctor spoke about how he was motivated to get into his field of work as a young child when he saw that American were creating a machine to help with the operation of hearts.
Viewers and the presenters were left in awe after one of the doctor's patients joined him on the show and shared the incredible tale of how his risky surgery decision saved her life.
After the interview, Phil was led to comment: "Can I say just between us, why isn't he a Sir?"
Holly replied: "Why isn't he? He pulled this thing out of his pocket that he made for you to put inside a heart.
"We didn't have to show that. Men like that, just amazing isn't?"
Viewers flocked to social media to share their appreciation for the surgeon's amazing work and many called for him to receive a knighthood.
One wrote: "Prf. Steve should be recognised as a hero - this is an example of who should be getting OBEs/Knighthoods etc - NOT Celebrities."
Another agreed: "#thismorning You've got people like that Heart surgon and the vet on super vet doing amazing work yet celebs and sports people get knighted."
One tweeted: "This is the kind of person to get a knighthood not Andy Murray/Elton John #thismorning"
While another wrote: "Give this surgeon and other drs a knighthood - never mind David Beckham!#thismorning."
One viewer gushed: "OMG how amazing is this heart surgeon. I am in awe-if anyone is to be knighted it's him #thismorning"
The comments came after David Beckham faced backlash over leaked emails in which he "expressed his disappointment at not being made a Sir."
