The Moorside episode 2 preview – Julie Bushby’s suspicions about Karen Matthews grow in sneak peek of finale

LAST week's explosive first episode of BBC's The Moorside left off with community members celebrating after missing schoolgirl Shannon Matthews was found alive.

However, as anyone familiar with the true story of Shannon Matthews well knows, everything is not as it seems.

A sneak peek at the second and final instalment of the show, set to air Tuesday, hints at plenty more drama to come.

Shannon's mum Karen, played by Gemma Whelan, is seen surrounded by press and police following the nine-year-old's discovery in the base of a double bed, 24 days after she disappeared.

Her best friend Julie Bushby, played by Sheridan Smith, rushes through the throng to embrace the mum.

But Julie appears to become suspicious of her pal — given Shannon was found in the home of Michael Donavan, the uncle of Karen's boyfriend.

Then Julie looks emotional as someone asks her: "You haven't lost your faith in people... have you?"

The Moorside won rave reviews when the first episode aired earlier this week, with fans (and the real-life Julie) praising Sheridan's performance in particular.

The two-parter recounts a real-life "disappearance" that gripped the nation in 2008.

Shannon Matthews was reported missing in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, after she failed to return from a swimming trip.

West Yorkshire police spent £3.2million searching for the youngster, and hundreds of neighbours banded together to help, while her mum pleaded on TV for her safe return.

As depicted in the TV show, Shannon was found alive less than a mile away from her home, more than three weeks after she disappeared.

The child was hidden in the base of a double bed in the home of Michael Donovan, the uncle of Craig Meehan, Karen's boyfriend.

Karen and Craig had planned to release Shannon themselves, then "find" her, take her to the police and claim reward money for her safe return.

Karen, who has seven kids, was dubbed "Britain's Most Hated Mum" after her crimes were uncovered.

She received an eight-year prison sentence for her involvement in the fake kidnapping, but served only half of it before she was released.
