EASTENDERS star Danny-Boy Hatchard has thanked fans for their support after he left the soap last night.
In a video posted on Twitter, the actor told fans that it had been an "honour" playing Lee Carter for the last three years.
He said: “These past three years you have been amazing, really, really amazing.
"I’ve had an incredible time at EastEnders helping create Lee as a character and helping bring awareness to mental health.
“It’s been a real honour and I couldn’t have done it without your support."
Danny-Boy had played the troubled former Army man since 2014.
Last night, fans saw Lee come back to Albert Square after he upped and left leaving wife Whitney a note at the end of the Valentine’s Day episode.
He arrived back to talk to his father Mick about his reasons for leaving before having a tearful conversation with Whitney, telling her why he was going to Dover and that she wouldn’t be coming with him.
Viewers then watched as Lee headed to his car after saying goodbye to Mick, and with a visibly upset Whitney watching from the window.
And as the scene played out, Danny-Boy took to his Twitter page and wrote: “Duf duf duf duf duf duf duf #endofanera #eastenders.”
Some fans were left upset at his departure as one wrote: “That episode had me in tears, going to miss lee”
Another added: “Can't believe @danboy has left, going to miss him Lee was such a great character #endofanera #eastenders."
And one other fan commented: “Sad to see Lee go but wishing the insanely talented @danboy all the best for his future projects.”
Many had expected the Valentine’s Day episode to be his last after scenes showed him and Whitney put recent marriage troubles to one side as they went out for a romantic dinner to try and patch things up.
Lee left the restaurant, telling her he was going to get something for her.
But he didn’t come back, leaving Whitney to pay the bill and head home alone – where she realised her other half had done a runner.
She then saw a note propped up against the pillow containing Lee’s wedding ring and a note that read: “I’m sorry, I just don’t love you anymore.”
The BBC announced last August that actor Danny-Boy Hatchard, who has played Lee since 2014, would be leaving the soap.
