Who was Kurt Cobain?

Kurt Cobain was born on February 20, 1967, in Washington.

At the age of 20 he set up the band Nirvana with Krist Novoselic, and they became central to the grunge movement of the early 90s.

The pair were later joined by drummer Dave Grohl, replacing Chad Channing, to form the most well-known line-up of the band.

In 1991 the band released their second album Nevermind which had huge success with rebellious rock song It Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Their other top tracks include About A Girl, Come As You Are, In Bloom and Heart-Shaped Box.

Kurt’s talent quickly earned him legions of fans and he was labelled “the spokesman of a generation”.

However, Kurt - an artistic introvert obsessed with human anatomy, who had always hated the way he looked - struggled to deal with the pressures of fame.

To cope with his mental and sometimes physical problems - which he defined as "stomach pains" - Kurt took drugs, having started smoking marijuana at the age of 13.

He began taking heroin in 1987, triggering an addiction that blighted his remaining years.

Indeed, Kurt's heroin use became out of control, affecting the band’s tour and public appearances and resulting in a rehab stint, relapse and an overdose.

After bonding through drugs and a desire to be the new Sid and Nancy, Courtney and Kurt got married on February 24, 1992, on Waikiki Beach Hawaii.

She remained married to the Nirvana star until his death in 1994.

How many children did they have?

A Vanity Fair interview with Courtney reported that she had confessed to using heroin before she realised she was pregnant – although Courtney claimed to have been misquoted.

The interview resulted in Frances being taken away from the couple by the Seattle child welfare agency for around four weeks, the couple eventually regained full custody of Frances.

On March 25, 1994, Courtney organised an intervention to try and tackle Kurt’s drug use.

Despite being angry, he agreed to go to a recovery centre, which he broke out of by scaling a six foot fence a week or so later.

On April 2 and 3, after leaving rehab, Kurt was spotted around his home town of Seattle but didn’t reach out to any of his family or friends.

But he was not seen in the following days despite Courtney hiring a private investigator to try and find him.

On April 8, 1994, Kurt was found dead in his home by an electrician who came to install a security system.

He had shot himself in the head and was found to have had a large amount of heroin in his system.

The artist left a suicide note in which he said: "I haven’t felt the excitement of listening to as well as creating music, along with really writing... for too many years now."

He ended the note with: "Please keep going Courtney, for Frances. For her life, which will be so much happier without me."

Kurt is one of several musicians who have died at the age of 27, including Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison.

There are many conspiracy theories surrounding Kurt's death, many of which lay blame at Courtney Love's feet.

But many theorists are motivated by an unwillingness to believe he died.
