He was the only member who could make it to the prestigious event, as the band continue their hiatus to work on their solo projects.
The band received the fan-voted Best British Music Video for their song History - beating out former band mate Zayn Malik in the process.

We cannot believe we are still winning these. Thank you very much."
Liam then reassured fans that his band mates were still a unit despite taking their break and added: "We have been taking some time out working on our solo music, but One Direction is who we are and who we will always be."
He later echoed the same sentiment on Instagram to his millions of followers for those who missed the show airing.
Bandmate Louis Tomlinson also voiced his thanks online by posting a video from his home in Doncaster to share his gratitude.
He said: "Absolutely incredible. I mean, I've said it so many times but you guys continue to surprise with how incredible you are over and over again.
"This means a hell of a lot to all of us and again sorry I couldn't be there tonight. I just wanted to spend the night with the family and do something special for them. But you guys - you are incredible. Thank you so much.
"Thank you for all the support through everything."
Niall Horan also shared his thanks and said: "Oh my days...time and time again you guys do it for us . Payno love ya bro."
He later added: "Still in shock . You guys are incredible , thank you"
Harry later completed the line-up by also tweeting a heartfelt thanks, and said: "Thank you so much to everyone that voted for the BRIT award tonight, your support is unbelievable. Always has been. Thank you, Love you. H"
Meanwhile, Liam's other half Cheryl was clearly suffering a case of FOMO on Wednesday night as she watched the BRITs from home.
However, she made sure she wasn't forgotten and shared a throwback snap from 2010 in the run up to the awards.
In the pic uploaded to Instagram, she was seen wearing a silver dress which featured a sheer skirt and fringed shoulders.
As she leaned against the wall, Cheryl showed off her slim legs and gave a sultry stare down the camera lens.
She captioned the shot: “Wishing all the Brit nominees and performers good luck for the show tonight.
“Looking forward to it. In the meantime here is my #tb #bts vogue shoot I did for the Brits 2010.”
The star’s fans couldn’t get enough of the glamorous picture, with many commenting on how beautiful she looked, while others lamented how much they miss her on social media these days.
