Huge Brit pop star left unable to walk after ‘idiot’ mistake while skiing left them in agony with ‘permanent’ injury
The singer has revealed they had to be rescued in a 'blood bag'
SAM Smith was left unable to walk after a terrifying skiing injury at the beginning of the year.
The Stay With Me singer was seen using a cane and wearing a leg brace in January and has now revealed they tore their ACL and had to be rescued off a ski slope.
Speaking about the horror accident for the first time, Sam said: “I’ve been really focusing on my mental stuff for the last seven months because I actually broke my ACL.
“I completely ripped my ACL. I was skiing. I was an idiot and went on a black slope on the second day.
“I got taken down in a blood bag. It was the worst. It’s a permanent thing.”
‘Completely ripped’
Sam, who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, has spent much of the year recovering after turning down the opportunity to have surgery.
Speaking on the BBC podcast Sidetracked with Annie Mac and Nick Grimshaw about the ACL tear, the British star explained: “It’s in between your bones and helps you jump and spring around.
“It completely ripped and I decided to go down the non-surgical route but I couldn’t walk for a month on this leg and it was awful.
“It was the first time I’d ever not been able to move and I was holding onto a bit of weight. I was very anxious. I used it as an excuse to get my s**t together.”
Sam also told how they have tried to wipe old flings from their life by getting rid of their mobile phone and starting afresh on one without any social media.
The musician said: “I actually just got rid of my phone and I got a new phone. It’s the first time I don’t have my library of music, that I’d had since I was like 11.
“I started again – fully started again. I needed an American number and my phone was just full of people like exes and all these different people through the years.
“I got a new one and then I put my old phone on airplane mode and I’ve never turned it off.

Sam Smith on his injury
“And I took social media off. Everything It’s crazy. I find myself sitting on benches now in parks just looking at the trees.”
Despite the injury, Sam will return to the stage next month for a performance at the BBC Proms.
