Fadi Fawaz praises BRIT Awards tribute to George Michael revealing the Chris Martin duet ‘broke my heart’
Late singer's boyfriend was touched by Wham! star Andrew Ridgeley's speech too
FADI Fawaz was left heartbroken by The BRIT Awards tribute to George Michael on Wednesday night.
The celebrity hairdresser took to Twitter on Thursday to praise the awards organisers for paying their respects to his late boyfriend, who died on Christmas Day aged just 53.
George’s Wham! bandmate Andrew Ridgeley started things off by speaking movingly about his friend alongside their backing singers Pepsi and Shirlie, who also shared their memories of the singer.
Their tearful speech was followed by a stripped back performance of George’s ballad A Different Corner by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.
Part way through the song, archive footage of George singing the song appeared on screen behind him, with their voices being played out around the 02 Arena together.
For Fadi, it was a heartbreaking moment, which he reflected on the next day, writing: “I loved the tribute at Brits, Ex Wham touched me while the duets broke my heart.
“George loved Coldplay music very much.”
He added in a separate post: “Chris was great and George was the man x”.
Andrew said: “On Christmas Day 2016, the greatest singer songwriter of his generation, an icon of his era, George Michael, was lost.
“A supernova in the shining stars had been extinguished and it felt like the sky had fallen in.”
Shirlie then said: “One of my strongest memories is George and I walking to the post box and sending in big brown envelopes to record companies the boys’ first demo cassettes.
“Sadly they were all returned a few weeks later with a letter saying no thank you.
“However, of course, it was their loss. Fortunately one up and coming record label decided to give the boys a chance.”
Pepsi fought back tears as she added: “These three amazing friends took me into their fold and there was so much laughter, fun and kindness. They were truly wonderful times and I will always cherish them.”
