Where’s Johnny?
If you’re left wondering why Frank Carter is out front for the Sex Pistols on this tour it relates back to when Johnny Rotten, aka John Lydon, lost a High Court action to allow any one Pistol to veto use of the band’s music.
The catalyst for the case was the imminent filming of Steve Jones’s memoir Lonely Boy for the Disney+ mini-series Pistol for which Rotten said he was denied script approval.
Bad feeling (to say the least) between Lydon and the others means it’s now almost inconceivable that the original line-up will ever play together again. But it has also freed the original Matlock/Cook/Jones axis to bill themselves as the Sex Pistols … featuring (Rattlesnakes/Gallows/Pure Love frontman) Frank Carter, pictured below with Matlock, Cook and Jones.
Rotten is reportedly furious at the turn of events.

His interest in money matters began after he enrolled in a basic course in 1994 and was initially prompted by a realisation that he didn’t understand the financial reports submitted to the band.

I’m new to Guns N’ Roses – what do I need to know?
- Their 1987 album Appetite for Destruction is the place to start (it contains two of their biggest hits: Welcome to The Jungle and Paradise City)
- Their singer – Axl Rose – can belt out a Jack Daniels-soaked vocal. Sometimes …
- Their guitarist – Slash – is from Stoke; the same Stoke as Robbie Williams (and he likes snakes – Slash, not Robbie)
- They have a reputation for turning up to their gigs late. In June 2006 they kept fans at the Hammersmith Apollo in west London
- 1991 single November Rain is pompously over blown with a hideously expensive video whose budget could hoover up the debt of a small country; still, great pop tune
Guns N’ Facts
- Appetite for Destruction – the band’s 1987 debut album – is one of the best-selling albums of all time, shifting 30 million copies worldwide.
- Their cover of Bob Dylan’s Knocking on Heaven’s Door – a live favourite that later appeared on Use Your Illusion ll – has all the beauty of the original, although Slash’s searing guitars make it quintessentially GNR.
- Axl Rose arguably stole the show at the Freddie Mercury Aids Awareness tribute concert at Wembley on April 20 1992, below, with his gravity-defying whirling dervish appearance during Bohemian Rhapsody.
When will the tour start?
Kicking off on May 23 at Saudi Arabia Kingdom Arena, the string of shows will continue with stadium stops in Bulgaria, Serbia, Turkey, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Hungary and Austria.
