From Orange Is The New Black to Game of Thrones and Poldark, a look at the top TV shows this summer
THIS summer is set to be a scorcher when it comes to our TV schedules, with some of our favourite shows returning and a couple of brand new dramas coming our way.
From series five of Orange Is The New Black to gruesome thrillers The Loch and Trust Me – June and July are packed with enough entertainment to keep even the most ardent sun-junkies from getting a tan.
Gypsy – Netflix
Naomi Watts stars as therapist Jean Holloway ‘develops illicit and intimate relationships’ with those she’s supposed to be helping.
In steamy pictures released earlier this year, Jean is caught in a passionate embrace Sydney (Sophie Cookson) and it’s been revealed that Fifty Shades Of Grey’s Sam Taylor-Johnson was at the helm for the first two episodes of the 10 episode series.
Critics have tipped the new psychological thriller, which airs on June 17, as a must see.
Top Of The Lake – BBC 2
Three years on from the first series, the star studded cast – including Nicole Kidman – are back for another instalment of the chilling drama which starts in July.
Time has jumped and we go back into the series four years on, with Robin (Elizabeth Moss) living in Sydney.
After a sex worker’s body is washed up in a suitcase on the beach, she’s tasked with finding the killer. But with the woman’s injuries so severe, she is forced to infiltrate the city’s brothels to try and track down the culprit.
The series had its screening at the Cannes Film Festival and received a standing ovation.
Game Of Thrones – Sky Atlantic
It’s never too late to get involved in the series but trust us, if you catch one episode of series seven you won’t be able to stop yourself binge watching the entire box set and cursing yourself for being so behind.
The trailer for the latest instalment was watched over 61 million times in just 24 hours and bosses are keeping spoilers under wraps.

With Dany and Jon Slow looking likely to align, Gendry and Jorah Mormont rumoured to be returning and Ed Sheeran making a musical cameo (weird) this series is sure to be as gripping as the last.

The Loch – ITV
This Missing’s Laura Fraser returns for another chilling thriller, this time about a serial killer on the loose in the Highlands of Scotland.
She joins Happy Valley’s Siobhan Finneran, John Sessions, Don Gilet, Gray O’Brien and William Ash for the creepy six part series.
Several locals will come into the frame as detective Annie Redford tries to flush out the twisted murderer, but many lives could be lost along the way.
Orange Is The New Black – Netflix
Series five of Orange Is The New Black will be more powerful and thought provoking than ever.
Earlier this month a hacker leaked some of the new episodes but most have been able to avoid ruining the hotly anticipated new season.
Following the brutality in the last series, fans of the show return to Litchfield to see a full scale riot going on but their rebellion could well in serious reprisals as the show goes on.
Trust Me – BBC One
Broadchurch’s Jodie Whittaker takes a starring role in the Beeb’s latest drama which follows nurse Cath Hardacre go on the run.
Stealing her friend’s identity, she goes on the run as a doctor and starts a new life in Scotland.
But with her ex Carl (Blake Harrison) hot on her heels, it’s unlikely she’ll get away with her crime for long.
Early reviews the four-parter isn’t to be missed when it starts later this summer.
Riviera – Sky Atlantic
The new ten part thriller with have viewers on the edge of their seats as they take a look into the murky underworld of the rich and famous.
Georgina Clios (Julia Stiles) is left devastated after her millionaire husband dies, but it seems she’s got bigger things to worry about, as the art dealer was tangled up in a web of deceit and drug dealing.
Expect murder, sex and shocking beautiful shots of the French Riviera in all its glory when the show starts on June 15.
Poldark – BBC One
The swaggering man of our dreams Captain Ross Poldark has returned but he’s not going to have an easy series.
As the Warleggen fight intensifies, Ross (Aiden Turner) is thrown straight into the thick of the action – sadly with most of his clothes on.
He’s also facing a battle at home, as while all appears well with his gorgeous wife Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) his one night stand with Elizabeth is going to result in a baby.
But is Ross the father? Will he really not pick up a scythe again? You can find out when it starts again next month.
Preacher – Amazon Prime
The second series is returning with 13 episodes on June 19 and, thanks to Dominic Cooper posting a picture of some bloodied intestines on the road, it seems it’s going to be more gruesome than ever.
Jesse Custer (Cooper) is a small town preacher who’s possessed by a half demon, half angel entity.
The Saint of Killers is after him, a man in white suit wants a word and we may finally found out just who killed Jesse’s father.
Preacher is based on the comic of the same name and if you’ve never heard of it, it’s worth watching series one to see if you get hooked to this addictive show.
Fearless – ITV
ITV dramas have never looked better recently and new series Fearless looks as though it won’t disappoint.
Helen McCrory stars as human rights lawyer Emma Banville who has a history of helping lost causes.
When she starts to help a man who’s already spent 14 years behind bars for the murder of a young schoolgirl, there aren’t many people queuing up to thank her.
As she continues to dig deeper, a wall of silence starts to build and Emma finds herself battling against the police and intelligence services to get to the truth.
With Michael Gambon starring as a university professor and Marcella’s Jamie Bamber joining the cast – this series has hit written all over it.
