The youngster - who wowed the judges at his initial audition by performing one of his own songs - is the son of former Army officer Toby Gray who served in Afghanistan in the Coldstream Guards.

A source said: “For Reuben he wanted to do the show to get his music to a wider audience.

“While the payday is nice - he wants to use his appearance for a greater good and is planning to give nearly half of the prize to military charities.

“His childhood was dominated by his father Toby serving his country overseas and he has seen firsthand the effect the army can have on families. He is hugely proud of his dad’s career.”

In his first appearance on the show his father surprised young Reuben - who is studying for his GCSEs - by flying in from overseas where he spends much of his time for work.

Last night Reuben performed another of his own songs in the show’s fourth semi final.
