Who is in the cast with Claire Foy?

Claire Foy will be back in the lead role of Queen Elizabeth II, with Matt Smith also returning as her husband, Prince Phillip.

Vanessa Kirby (Princess Margaret), Victoria Hamilton (the Queen Mother) and Jeremy Northam (Antony Eden) will also resume their roles for series two.

However, one popular face that is set to be missing is John Lithgow as Winston Churchill.

The iconic Prime Minister resigned at the end of series one with Antony Eden replacing him, and Claire has hinted the actor has not been on set this time around.

She told Vulture: "It's awful! Me and Matt did a Skype chat the other day and John was there at the end in LA.

"It was so amazing just to see his face! I just love and miss him so much."

As the show moves through the decades of Queen Elizabeth's reign, new characters will be appearing.

As the second series looks set to cover the time period from 1957 until 1964, viewers will see Dexter's Michael C Hall join as President John F.Kennedy, while actress Jodi Balfour will play his wife Jackie Kennedy.

Matthew Goode also joins the show as Lord Snowdon/Antony Armstrong-Jones, the society photographer who went on to marry Princess Margaret.

What will series two of The Crown be about?

While Season 1 focused on how Elizabeth, her family and the country coped with the weight of the Crown, Season 2 sees Elizabeth - and to a lesser extent the whole family - come to an uncomfortable understanding that the role of the monarchy in Britain has changed.

Starting in 1956 at the height of the Suez Crisis, ending with the resignation of Harold Macmillan in 1964 amid the Profumo scandal, The Crown Season 2 spans a period in which Britain is hurtling towards the swinging sixties and with that, the end of the age of deference.

Producer Suzanne Mackie has said of series two: "It has a different flavour. It feels like the '60s are with us and it has a slight shock of the new."
