14 of the most memorable Lady Gaga looks ever – from the iconic meat dress to a coat of Kermit the frogs
The singer and actress has become known for her outlandish and incomparable sense of style - and these are just some of the best...
IT’S almost impossible to decide exactly which Lady Gaga look is her best – or her most bonkers.
The star has a style that is incomparable to anyone else, and these are just 14 statements that made her hit the headlines as a true walking work of art.
The blonde hair bow (2008)
It’s hard to believe now, but when Gaga first came on the scene with a blonde bow made of hair on her head and a series of pointed dresses, the public thought THIS was edgy!
The young star showed her flare for their dramatic immediately – and was often seen in dark clothes with a smokey eye and a long, blonde and fringed wig.
Little did we know that less than four years later, this would look plain in comparison…
Having a bubble (2009)
On her The Fame Tour, Gaga took her stage show to stadium levels with numerous wardrobe changes, including one made entirely of see-through bubbles.
Wearing a skin coloured leotard underneath to ensure not TOO much is revealed, the star would perform in the get up often from behind a piano.
She later channelled this look again in 2013 when she walked around in another outfit that let out actual bubbles around her. Subtle.
The coat of Kermits (2009)
By this point, Gaga was becoming known as someone who thinks outside the box – and the cloak of Kermits certainly cemented that.
Proving it’s not easy being green, Gaga donned the outfit (which of course, came with a hair clip as well) and later revealed that it was a commentary on wearing fur.
Speaking about her love of the designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, she said: “I hate fur and I don’t wear fur. We were all laughing in the house about how it looks like a pile of dead Kermits!”
Crime scene cover-up (2010)
Partnering up with Beyonce for this catchy number, Gaga put on more than a dozen different outfits during this ten-minute-long promotional video for their hit song, Telephone.
These include a boob-baring black-and-white number, a stars-and-stripes leotard and rolling her hair up with the use of coke cans while wearing a black studded bra-and-pants set.
While they are all pretty up there in terms of epic visuals, it’s wrapping up her body in crime-scene tape and writhing around in a jail cell that tops the list.
As Beyonce later said in the video before they rode off together in a bright-yellow car dubbed the “P**** Wagon”: “You’ve been a bad, bad girl, Gaga.”
Got Beef? (2010)
Quite possibly Lady Gaga’s biggest statement of all, the star wore a dress and headpiece made entirely of beef to the 2010 Video Music Awards.
Causing outrage among animal rights groups, Gaga later went on record to state that the piece was “a statement on the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy regarding LGBT people in the US Military”.
It was later named by Time magazine as the best fashion statement of 2010.
Grammy Awards (2010)
Proving her looks weren’t all just shock factor, Gaga and her clothing fashion house, Haus of Gaga, created a stunning lilac dress for her appearance at the 2010 Grammy awards.
The look combined the star’s distinctive sense of unique style with classic glamour, and was completed with a spiky globe the star held in her hands for the entire time she wore the outfit.
Wearing skyscraper diamante heels, the lilac dress was a corseted, super-looped dress with a shaped hooped skirt that showed off the crystals that adorned her legs.
However, in true Gaga style, she changed outfits no less than three times during her time at the event – wearing a David Bowie inspired pink and green outfit for a performance, before wearing a silver dress with cubic slanted headpiece for when she picked up her awards.
Lady Guy Guy (2011)
With Lady Gaga, you should be prepared to expect the unexpected – and in what she later called a “mischievous experiment”, she arrived at the 2011 VMAs as Jo Calderone.
Acting as her male counterpart and complete with a quiff, leather jacket and cigarette, Jo was completely unrecognisable as Gaga.
At the event, ‘Jo’ sang You and I on stage, and later spoke to press revealing he was of “Italian-American heritage from New Jersey”.
She was photographed by Terry Richardson as Jo, and many believed it was partly done to mock a long-standing conspiracy theory that she was either really a man, or a hermaphrodite that was hiding their true identity from the public (something she’s maintained is completely false).
Oh, Christmas Tree (2013)
What happens when you’re on tour around Christmas and can’t have a tree to call your own? Why, if you’re Gaga, you just become one of course!
This classic look was comprised of a stunning red playsuit, fishnets and her iconic, ankle breaking high heels – topped off with a green wig complete with a tree hat, complete with baubles.
At least no one can accuse her of not getting in the festive spirit that year!
A shining star (2014)
Of all of Gaga’s ‘casual’ looks, this one is probably the one that is the least casual of all.
Wearing a black wig with dark gothic make-up, the singer offset her dark appearance by turning herself into a literally shining star with more than 30 spikes of glitter covering her entire body.
The outfit, worn while heading into the VIP Room club in Paris, definitely left a lasting impression.
We’re not quite sure how this functioned as an outfit, how she managed to survive a night in it, or how she went to the loo…but all we know is is that it’s absolutely magical.
Practically naked mermaid (2013)
Heading out to release her third album, ArtPOP, the star hit the road once again – and stunned by emerging from a clam shell dressed like an almost completely naked mermaid.
Donning a highly big bouffant brunette wig, Gaga showed off her figure wearing nothing but shells over her boobs and highly decorated underwear (plus fishnets of course) in honour of Venus, which is also a song on the record.
It was clear the star lived for the applause, and her new album revealed a string of new hits including Applause and Do What U Want.
Golden Globe awards (2016)
After years of being great shock value, Lady Gaga gave her fans her most surreal look yet – looking completely glam and an absolute classic beauty.
Winning an award at the ceremony for her work on American Horror Story: Hotel, the event marked a new lease of life on the star’s career – one as an actress, rather than a singer.
At the event, she stunned with her natural hair in short, tight waves, and she showed off her incredible figure in a floor-length, black-velvet gown.
And when she picked up her award, the stunned star’s beaming smile completed her look in a way that no glitter or fishnets could.
