Where is Victoria season 2 filmed? Harrogate filming locations for the ITV series
THE first series of Victoria was ITV’s highest rating drama of 2016, with an average of 7.7million viewers – and the second series has been just as gripping so far.
The drama is set at the heart of the courts of Queen Victoria, and there are stunning backdrops to much of the show, but what locations should viewers look out for?
When is Victoria on ITV?
The ITV drama’s first series explored the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign following her accession to the throne aged just 18.
The second season started a month after the birth of Queen Victoria's first child with Prince Albert and she unsettles and surprises her advisers by informing them of her desire to return to her royal duties at once.
The seventh episode of the new series airs tonight (Sunday, October 15) at 9.00pm on ITV. It will be competing against The Last Post on BBC One, Louis Theroux: Dark States on BBC Two and Electric Dreams on Channel 4.
Where is Victoria filmed?
Most of the action is centred on the show's events at Buckingham Palace, which are filmed in a studio in Church Fenton.
But this season will also take the characters further afield in the UK, "France" and "Germany".
Many British spots doubled up as the foreign locations, and some of the most stunning country homes and parks around England and Scotland were used, here are some of the most breathtaking spots:
Harewood House
Parts of the stunning Harewood House, near Leeds, West Yorkshire, were transformed in Buckingham Palace for the hit show in season one, and crew returned for filming season two.
Filming took place at the 250-year-old home on August 2 to 5 this year, with the State Rooms being used for the show.
It is no wonder that the sumptuous Palladian mansion was selected, as its official rooms embody all the pomp of their eras.
In fact, the real young Princess Victoria visited in 1835 and wrote in her diary on September 12: "Harewood is in Yorkshire. The park seems very fine; the view from the window is very pretty. We dined in the beautiful gallery with a party of nearly 300 in number."
Allerton Castle (doubled as Germany)
The stunning Allerton Castle, or Allerton Park as it is known by many, was chosen represent Prince Albert's home.
It described itself as being "England's most elegant gothic revival stately home", and it is clear to see why it was selected.
The Grade I listed nineteenth-century house is located in North Yorkshire and was rebuilt in 1843 to 53.
Beverley Minster
You may remember Beverley Minster in Beverley, Yorkshire, from the first season, as it was used to represent Westminster Abbey.
It was here that Victoria was crowned Queen in the first episode, and parts of it will be used in season two.
The building is one of the most dramatic examples of Gothic architecture in the north of England, with tombs dating back to the 1340.
Ripon Cathedral
Part of the North Yorkshire city of Ripon was used to depict Westminster Abbey and Hall for the second series.
Crew spent three days in Ripon, including one day to prepare the set, one day for the filming, and a final day to return to place of worship back to normal.
Its south nave and north quire aisles were reportedly used for scenes.
Wentworth Woodhouse
Britain's biggest private house, Wentworth Woodhouse, was selected as a filming spot for both seasons of the series.
Last year the South Yorkshire estate made an appearance not just for Buckingham and Kensington Palace, but was also used for a brothel scene.
Wentworth Castle near Barnsley in South Yorkshire was also used for some scenes.
Blair Castle (Scotland)
Crew headed to Scotland for scenes involving the Duke of Atholl, played by BAFTA and Emmy-nominated actor Denis Lawson, who welcomes Victoria and Albert to the Highlands.
Scenes were filmed at breathtaking, historic landmark, Blair Castle, in Perthshire in June.
The category A listed building is said to have been started to be built in 1269, and later went on to host Queen Victoria and Prince Albert themselves in 1844.
After her stay, the royal gave permission to establish the Atholl Highlanders, which is a regiment not part of the British Army but is in the private employ of the Duke of Atholl.
Harlaxton Manor (doubled as France)
Instead of trekking the crew to France, filming instead took place at Harlaxton Manor in Lincolnshire.
The stunning home was built in 1837 and combines element of Jacobean and Elizabethan and Baroque styles.
As well as Victoria, it has been used as a filming spot for films The Ruling Class, The Last Days of Patton, The Lady and the Highwayman, The Haunting and The Young Visiters.
Duncombe Park
Film crew headed to Duncombe Park near Helmsley, North Yorkshire, in March to shoot some scenes for the upcoming season.
The magnificent property is located in 300 acres of parkland and was completed in 1713.
In 2012, it was the site of another period drama, Parade's End, which starred Benedict Cumberbatch.
What happens in Victoria season 2?
Viewers will see Victoria struggle to strike a balance between her dual roles as monarch and mother.
ITV bosses have said: "Even though she reigned in the 19th Century, Victoria is a heroine for our times.
“In the next series, she faces the very modern dilemma of how to juggle children with her husband and her job.
"As Victoria will discover, it’s hard to be a wife, a mother and ruler of the most powerful nation on earth!"
The second season will have eight episodes, followed by a Christmas special in December.
Victoria stars Jenna Coleman as she reprises her role as Queen Victoria, leading the country while also attempting not to fail in her duties to her husband Prince Albert and their children.
The role of Prince Albert is played by Tom Hughes, who is dating Jenna off-screen, as he continues to battle with his position as the Queen's spouse.
