Maggie Gyllenhaal left horrified in TV drama The Deuce when a punter dies during sex act in shocking scene
THE Dark Knight actress plays the role of single mum Eileen Merrell - who goes by the name Candy while working as a prostitute - in 1970s New York
THE latest episode of sleazy US drama The Deuce sees Maggie Gyllenhaal’s prostitute character Candy left horrified after an obese punter dies while she’s giving him oral sex.
The man perches on the bed of a typical 70s-style bedroom as single mum Eileen Merrell (Gyllenhaal) goes to work on him.
However, things soon take a dark turn as he falls back with a pained expression on his face.
Eileen, whose prostitute name is Candy, places a hand on his chest and leans over him before pulling up her underwear and leaving.
In another graphic scene, Candy is interrupted while performing oral in a porn cinema when a rat jumps onto her.
Secretary star Maggie plays the dual role of single mum Eileen Merrill in the show, who moonlights as a sex worker named Candy to support her child.
She’s drawn into the world of 1970s porn after it was legalised in America, and after starring in several low-budget productions, finds herself moving behind the camera to create her own content.
The actress told : “She gets involved in the beginnings of porn in someone’s basement. And even though there’s two naked guys and another naked woman and they’re filming sex, that’s incidental to her.
“What’s exciting for her is the lighting, the idea of looking at sex through a lens. It’s the birth of an artist. Once that gets woken up in her, it can’t go back to sleep.”
Maggie also revealed that she requested the director add in another intimate scene for her to film – of her character masturbating.
She told: “I thought here’s all this performative sex, all this transactional sex.
“I wanted to know what her desire looks like. And after we filmed it he was ‘OK, OK. We’re OK. We have made something feminist. We have.'”
Mum of two Maggie admitted that she was concerned about the impact the series would have on her children.
She said: “Sometimes I do feel a little bit worried about the nudity being out there, but at the same time, I think that I’m using my body to make something really interesting and I like the message that that sends my daughters.”
