Davina McCall reveals starting the menopause reminded her of her junkie days after night sweats felt like she was going cold turkey
DAVINA McCall has revealed starting the menopause reminded her of the days when she was coming off heroin and going cold turkey.
The fitness guru and presenter - who turns 50 tomorrow, battled with heroin addiction during her twenties, and says her painful past came back to haunt her when she entered the menopause during her mid-forties.
She told Stella magazine: “The first time I noticed something was happening to me was when I got terrible night sweats.
“For me as an ex-junkie, the night sweats were terrible because it reminded me of going through cold turkey at night and waking up in a pool of sweat.”
Adding that her “libido was through the floor”, she also suffered with insomnia and brain fog.
“It was effecting my ability to read the autocue,” she continued.
“A producer said, ‘Are you OK?’ because I was cocking up quite a bit.
“My keys were in the fridge and my phone was in the bin. And I was always in a really bad bloody mood.”
She added: “I thought this f***ing menopause is finishing me off.”
In the past Davina had always been a fan of alternative therapies but after researching and starting to take popular menopause drug HRT, she admits it changed her life.
She said: “All my symptoms stopped overnight. I’m not endorsing it. It was a personal decision.”
The mum-of-three who married Matthew Robertson in 2000, has a slew of fitness DVDs and always wows fans with her incredible figure also revealed how going through the menopause has left her feeling sexier.
“I feel, in a funny way, it’s almost more attractive that I can’t have children, because now I don’t need to take contraception,” she explained.
“There’s a certain friskiness that comes about that. There is a confidence that comes with age.”
