When is Gunpowder starting on BBC One and what is it about?

Gunpowder is broken up into three hour-long parts, with the first being shown on October 21 at 9.10pm on BBC One.

The whole thing will then be released on BBC iPlayer shortly afterwards so you can save it for Bonfire Night on November 5.

If you don't want to do that you can watch the second episode a week later, and the third a week after that.

The show follows Robert Catesby, the man who masterminded the 1605 Gunpowder Plot to blow up Parliament and kill reigning British monarch King James I, who's played by Derek Rissell.

Catesby is played by Kit Harington, while Liv Tyler plays Catesby's cousin Ann Vaux, who gets tangled up in the plot.

The drama will illustrate just why and how the plot was formed - and in particular, the motivation of Catholic Catesby, who had just lost his wife and father and felt like society was punishing him.

Viewers may be surprised that Guy Fawkes has a minor role to play in the series, and he is played by Downton Abbey's Tom Cullen.

Kirkstall Abbey

Cistercian monastery Kirkstall Abbey is situated north of Leeds city centre and was founded as a place of worship back in 1152.

It was disestablished in 1539 following orders by Henry VIII but thanks to its very well preserved facade, it went on to inspire artists like JMW Turner.

Currently used as a museum, it has hosted the Leeds Shakespeare Festival as well as a huge Kaiser Chief concert.

Ilkley Moor

Shooting also went on across the distinctive section of moorland between Ilkley and Keighley.

It's characterised by huge boulders, some bearing carvings made back in the late Neolithic and Bronze Ages, its most well-known rock formation is the Cow And Calf.

Countless films have been shot on this moorland, including Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette's comedy Miss You Already.

East Riddlesden Hall

This National Trust-owned, Grade 1 listed property overlooking the River Aire was built in 1642.

The owners who rebuilt it in 1648, the Murgatroyds, were known for their profanity and debauchery - and legend states the river curved away from the property because of their antics.

Scouts looking for locations chose East Riddlesden Hall for the 1992 Wuthering Heights movie and the 2009 one.

Oakwell Hall

In early 2017 cast members were seen at Oakwell Hall, an Elizabethan Manor House in Birstall, West Yorkshire.

Built in 1583 by John Batt, the Grade 1 listed building is surrounded by its own period gardens and now exists as a council-owned "living museum".

Dalton Mills

Built by the Joseph Craven in 1869, this old textile mill was once the beating heart of Keighley, a leading industrial town back in those times.

Today much of Dalton Mills is derelict but its impressive exterior has attracted TV scouts from far and wide.

As well as being used for interior shots in Gunpowder, episodes of 1920s crime series Peaky Blinders have included footage from around the mill.

Beverley Minster

Gothic architectural masterpiece Beverley Minster has already been seen in the BBC drama King Charles II as well as ITV series Victoria.

The parish church has been standing in its current state since the 14th century, but significant additions were made in the 18th century.

And in the 16th century, when religious tension gripped the nation, Church authorities were keen to insure that "Popish" dissenters favouring the Catholicism Henry VII had outlawed were sniffed out.

Bradford College

An elaborate 17th-century set was built at Bradford College, with actors being spotted around the Garden Mill.
The team responsible for creating this eye-popping set is Prime Studios, based in Leeds, and Bradford's City of Film assisted too.
But instead of being based in Bradford or Leeds, Gunpowder star Kit Harington kept away from the limelight by renting in the nearby village of Saltaire during filming.
