PETER CAPALDI came face-to-face with the first incarnation of the Time Lord in a preview of the Doctor Who Christmas Special, Twice Upon a Time.
Fans of the show were given a sneak peek at the festive episode on tonight's Children in Need, and saw the twelfth doctor enter the Tardis with the first doctor - played by David Bradley.
The role was originally played by William Hartnell but David adopted the character with aplomb, appearing confused as to who exactly Peter was, before branding the Tardis "hideous".
The men were joined by World War I pilot played by Mark Gatiss, who seemed even more perplexed by his surroundings, asking: "Am I going mad?"
Peter replied: "You're an officer for WW1 at the south pole being pursued by an alien through the arctic".
As the pilot got even more confused that there could have been more than one world war, the first incarnation of the doctor finally realised he was looking at himself.
"You are me?" he asked in surprise, but as Peter confirmed that he was, David quipped: "I assumed I'd get younger."
Looking appalled, Peter replied: "I am younger!" before the clip ended.
Viewers were delighted to see the footage, with one writing on Twitter: "Lovely #DoctorWho clip on #CIN2017. David Bradley suitably Hartnelly, Capaldi's grown his hair out in readiness. Cannae wait."
Another added: "The Doctor Who clip was amazing. And a little reference to the 11th Doctor."
A third tweeted: "“I *AM* younger!!” Oh, Peter Capaldi, I’m going to miss you so. #DoctorWho #PeterCapaldi #CIN2017 ".
Indeed, Peter will depart the BBC series during the Christmas Special, as he regenerates into the 13th doctor, who will be played by Jodie Whittaker.
The actress was unveiled as the first female doctor back in July and will see her first scenes as the Time Lord air on Christmas Day.
