James Blunt entrusts best mate Ed Sheeran to be his son’s godfather
ED SHEERAN has spent as much time in A&E as he has in the charts in the past year.
He’s had to have stitches in his face — TWICE — broken both arms and burned a foot in an Icelandic volcanic spring.
But that hasn’t deterred best pal JAMES BLUNT from entrusting Ed with one of life’s major responsibilities.
The singer, who is married to Sofia Wellesley, has just made the clumsy superstar the godfather of their little boy.
In an exclusive chat, Ed said: “James is like a brother to me, actually I’m not quite sure if I can say this, but I’m going to — he’s just made me godfather to his son. To be honest, I think he’s only done it because he knows I’ve got a good idea of what sort of person he’d want him to be when he grows up — an absolute lad.
“We’re going to be brothers for life.”
Ed joins the late CARRIE FISHER on the list of the tot’s spiritual guardians.
James revealed earlier this year he had given the late Star Wars legend the honour following the baby’s arrival in June 2016.
Sadly she passed away before she could meet the newborn, whose name is still yet to be revealed.
Ed, who is also godfather to rapper BIG NARSTIE’s child, is 17 years younger than first-time dad Blunt, who will be relying on the singer to bridge the gap with his sprog.
And Ed certainly hasn’t been shying away from his lad duties lately.
He showed off his credentials most recently on ITV2 gameshow Celebrity Juice where he secretly downed eight cups of booze while filming and got teammate, football pundit CHRIS KAMARA so drunk he could barely talk.
He also showed off his chest hairs when he broke his arms in a cycling accident last month.
He still went to the pub and drank through the pain before going to hospital the following morning.
Ed’s accident-prone year started last Christmas when he had his face sliced open by a sword when PRINCESS BEATRICE was attempting to “knight” James.
He surely won’t be on carving duty this Christmas.

Louisa show's leg up
THERE hasn’t been a leg bomb like this since ANGELINA JOLIE at the 2012 Oscars.
LOUISA JOHNSON made sure all eyes were on her – and her left leg – at Global’s Make Some Noise Night in London on Thursday.
The former X Factor winner performed a selection of her hits at the glitzy fundraiser, and she was later joined on stage by MYLEENE KLASS.
Sadly they didn’t perform a surprise duet of HEAR’SAY classic Pure and Simple.
Gem health fear
GEMMA COLLINS had a shock yesterday when she suffered another fall.
She collapsed at the home of her make-up artist Lisa just weeks after falling in front of 12,000 people, live on TV, at Radio 1’s Teen Awards.
An insider said: “Lisa called for immediate medical attention.
“Gemma has struggled with ill health recently after suffering with kidney stone symptoms. So for now Towie filming has been put on hold.”
Gemma’s role as Sun columnist for I’m A Celeb has been put on the hold, too – but hopefully she will be back and fighting fit next week.
Her collapse comes after a boozy Christmas party this week with her Towie co-stars JAMES ARGENT and CHLOE SIMS.
I’m sure that wouldn’t have helped with her present condition.
Together again to bring you sunshine
MICHAEL BALL and ALFIE BOE outsold ROBBIE WILLIAMS, STORMZY and LADY GAGA last year to claim the Christmas No1 with their album Together.
The singers are now hoping to conquer this year’s singles chart by forming a supergroup.
They will team up with stars including MIRANDA HART and comedian JASON MANFORD to release a cover of the MORECAMBE AND WISE beloved classic Bring Me Sunshine.
Proceeds from the single will go to the children’s charity Rays of Sunshine, which grants the seasonal wishes of seriously ill kids and teenagers across the country.

The pair will also be embarking on another major arena tour across the UK later this year, that is due to kick off in Cardiff and finish in London.
Perhaps Miranda and friends will join the twosome on stage.

An insider said: “Naughty Boy saw the lads on X Factor and was impressed, and he’s actually known them since they were kids.
“So he got in touch and suggested working on some music together, and Simon has given it the OK. They’re hoping it could form the basis of their debut after the show ends.”
Naughty Boy already boasts a long-list of chart hits after teaming up with stars including SAM SMITH, EMELI SANDE and BEYONCE.
They’re in safe hands.
