Tamara Ecclestone says husband Jay Rutland tells her off for wasting money
But the devoted mum says she's usually splurging on daughter Sophia rather than herself
I don’t know how many rooms I have in my house [in Knightsbridge, London]. We don’t use all the rooms unless we have people over or throw a party. But on a day-to-day basis, we only use three or four.
I don’t ever think about downsizing, though. My bedroom is my favourite room because it’s so comfortable. I probably have the biggest bed in the whole wide world because Fifi [Tamara’s name for daughter Sophia, three] sleeps in our bed too, so there are three of us in it.
Jay tells me off for wasting money. I’m quite in to saving, though, and I try to get 2-for-1 deals at the supermarket. My dad [billionaire ex-Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone] is the thriftiest man alive so I guess it’s in my genes. I hate carrying around cash because you just spend it and you have no idea what you’ve spent it on. If you were to look in my purse now, I would have less than £50.”
I have about 20 staff, including housekeepers, a driver, a chef, a PA and some bodyguards. My bodyguards go everywhere I go but you wouldn’t know, they are quite discreet. Our safety is a priority since Fifi came along. I’m not as concerned about my safety as I am about hers, though.
I have people who cook for me, but I always make breakfast because apparently I make the best bacon sandwich for my husband Jay. I also get up early every morning and make porridge and tea for me and Fifi.
Fifi goes to nursery three days a week, so I’ll have some work meetings and go to the gym. I collect her from nursery, we’ll have lunch and then Fifi usually has some sort of class, such as ballet or football. Then we love to go to the park and meet up with my sister [Petra] and her kids. At home, we do dinner, bath and bed at 6.30pm and then it’s my time with Jay. We’ll usually get a takeaway and watch some TV.
I love [US drama] This Is Us and I’m obsessed with The Good Wife. My dad always said I should have been a lawyer because I can argue about anything, so if I’d had to do a normal job, I would have been a lawyer.
I will make sure my daughter grows up with a good work ethic. Sophia says ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ and I’ll make sure she realises how lucky she is as I get older. She will have chores to do too because I always did. She won’t be scrubbing the house from head to toe, but she’ll have to tidy up after herself. She’s still my princess, but she’ll be a princess that does a few chores.
My biggest addiction is online shopping. I do it at night when I should be sleeping, but I’m not usually buying things for me, I’ll be buying things for Fifi or for the house. Jay thinks I’m crazy for the amount of online shopping I do. I admit I’m bad for buying beauty products that I never use. I’ll think I need to get into using fancy eye creams, so I’ll buy them and be too lazy to use them.
The biggest misconception about me? There are so many! People probably think that I’m really spoilt and maybe not a nice person too. It doesn’t bother me any more. I’m in such a happy place in my life, so it’s a waste of energy and time thinking about it. People are always going to have their opinions.
I had Botox once but I haven’t had it in five and a half years. I don’t have any cosmetic procedures these days because I’m still breastfeeding. I wouldn’t have anything done now, though, until I’m older, because you can tell when people have had work done.
I am teetotal. I haven’t had a drink since my wedding, which will be five years in June. I got pregnant and now I’m breastfeeding. I don’t miss it. Who needs the calories or the hangover?
The only music I listen to is the Frozen soundtrack. I know it came out ages ago, but Fifi is so loyal to it, so that’s all we listen to. Frozen 2 isn’t out until 2019, so that’s a long time to have to keep listening to the same thing!
