ACTRESS Frances McDormand, the star of hit movie Nomadland, won the Best Actress gong at the 2021 Oscars - but she is no stranger to Academy awards.

Who is Frances McDormand and how old is she?
Frances McDormand is a multi-award-winning American actress. She was born in Gibson City, Illinois, on June 23, 1957 - that makes her 63.
The actress was adopted at one and a half years of age by a couple originally from Canada.
Frances is one of the few performers who has achieved the Triple Crown of Acting - an Academy Award for the 1996 film Fargo; a Tony Award for the 2011 Broadway play Good People; and an Emmy Award for the 2014 HBO miniseries Olive Kitteridge.
She also won a Golden Globe Award for 2017's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
In school, Frances developed a passion for acting and she went on to study theatre at college.
Although she enjoyed a “great childhood”, once she had left home she started to rebel.
She admits having dabbled with drugs including hallucinogens LSD and magic mushrooms.
She said: “I had a list — virginity? Check it off, and get rid of it as quickly as possible. Every drug that didn’t involve a needle, I wanted to try it.”
Her fascination with cannabis has endured, and in 2003 she appeared on the front of the stoner magazine High Times holding a spliff.
During her studies she became pals with Holly Hunter and they were later flatmates in New York.
Frances began her acting career in Derek Walcott's play Trinidad And Tobago, which was funded by the MacArthur Foundation. She made her Broadway debut in the 1984 revival of Awake and Sing.

Frances has three Oscars to her name.
She won her first Oscar in 1997 for Best Actress for her role as Marge Gunderson in Fargo.
In 2018 Frances won Best Actress again, as well as a 2018 Bafta, for her role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
She went on to win the 2021 Best Actress award at the 2021 Oscars for her role in Nomadland.
She is the fourth actress to win three Academy Awards for acting.

Who is Frances McDormand married to?
When Holly Hunter turned down the lead role in the Coen brothers’ 1984 debut movie Blood Simple, she recommended Frances as her replacement.
It was a decision which would shape the rest of Frances’s life.
She fell for the film’s co-director, Joel Coen, when he lent her a series of books including the erotic crime thriller The Postman Always Rings Twice.
Frances recalled: “A couple of nights later I said, ‘Would you like to come over and discuss the book?’ That did it. He seduced me with literature.”
The pair tied the knot in 1984, and adopted a son from Paraguay, Pedro McDormand Coen, in 1995.
They live in New York City.
