Morgan Freeman, 80, was born in Memphis, Tennessee.
He is the youngest of five children and was raised in Chicago and Mississippi - his father was a barber and his mother was a teacher.
He attended Los Angeles City College before serving as a mechanic in the US Air Force between 1955 and 1959 with the hope of eventually becoming a fighter pilot.
Upon realising his passion for acting he moved to Hollywood, but after struggling to find work he relocated to New York.
The actor's big break came in 1967 when he got a part in the all African-American Broadway production Hello, Dolly! and an off-Broadway play The Nigger Lovers.

Deena was Morgan's step-daughter from his first marriage to Jeanette Bradshaw - the couple divorced in 1979.
