Those watching at home felt rather let down by the departure, which was a far cry from some of the more dramatic exits over the years.

Taking to Twitter to express their disappointment, one person wrote: “Johnny getting a lame exit... again #EastEnders.”

While another commented: “I’m a little disappointed about Johnny’s exit. I thought he’d get a good exit, not just driving away and that’s it 😒 #Eastenders.”

And a third person remarked: “Johnny deserved better #EastEnders.”

The Sun previously revealed that Ted would be leaving the soap as his character heads to Manchester for a training contract.

Johnny broke the news to his family as his dad Mick finally returned to the Square after two weeks spent recovering from a gunshot wound received in the heist.

"I've got a training contract," Johnny told his parents to their shock.

There was speculation over Ted's future on the show when he signed up to appear in a play in January.
