Speaking to Christine Lampard on today's Lorraine, he admitted he got the role by chance after his younger brother - who played Adam Barton on Emmerdale - wasn't able to take it.

He said: "I want to make this clear, this is the first time I’ve ever spoken about it, they offered me and Adam the part but luckily for Adam he was still in Emmerdale. ‘So it was great. I was like 'Yes! I’ll take this Adam'.

"Because if Adam was up for the part I probably wouldn’t get it because he’s just that little bit more talented than I am.

"I used to pay for his drama lessons and now his CV is bigger than mine. He's got more jobs on his CV than I do."

Late last year, Ryan, 33, excitedly revealed he would be joining hit Aussie soap Neighbours and posted a picture of him on the famous Ramsey Street set.

Producers have promised a dark plot line for his character which will "see him confront a difficult chapter from his past".

Rafael has been described as a northerner who grew up in Brazil until the age of ten before moving back to Manchester.

During his time in Brazil, his mother worked in a factory, and there was an incident where the two were badly hurt.

He knows that someone in Erinsborough is responsible for what happened, so he heads down under to get answers and revenge.

Ryan recently shared some snaps from set of him covered in scars and said it took two hours in the make-up chair to complete.

Speaking to recently about how his character is gay, Ryan said: "The character is very very deep, he’s very troubled and emotional.

"He’s a roller coaster of a character and he’s caught off guard with any relationship.

"He’s never really had relationships before and hasn’t been in touch with his own feelings before."
