She is set to undergo an operation on the torn ACL - one of the four ligaments in the knee joint - and will then need weeks of physical rehabilitation.

Symptoms of a torn ACL include a loud pop at the time of tearing followed by intense pain which makes walking or weight-bearing extremely difficult.

After her Twitter announcement, Kesha released a further heartfelt statement explaining her disappointment in having to cancel her shows.

She said: “Moving these dates is making me sick with sadness, but I tried to will this injury away and unfortunately it didn't work.

“I love you all and I'll work every single day, as hard as I can, to recover and get back on stage as soon as possible. I'm so sorry and sending love always.”

The injury is not expected to affect her tour dates with Macklemore, which are scheduled to begin in June.
