Elton John cuts short appearance on red carpet of Oscars 2018 viewing party after ‘minor surgery’ on his knee
SIR Elton John cut his appearance on the red carpet at his Oscars fundraiser tonight short after undergoing a “minor procedure” on his knee.
The superstar limped into the event after a brief photo opportunity and instead held interviews inside while sat down.
A spokeswoman for the singer said: “He has a thing going on with his knee. He is quite uncomfortable. He has had a minor procedure.”
He is currently hosting his 25th annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards viewing party in Los Angeles which Miley Cyrus, David Walliams and Nicole Scherzinger are due to attend.
The event is being held in West Hollywood, California - and Elton arrived at the event alongside husband David Furnish before quickly heading inside.
The 70-year-old star is currently continuing his Las Vegas residency - but has found himself in a spot of bother after having to walk off stage last week when a fan grabbed at him during his set.
Elton said: “On Thursday Night in Las Vegas a fan put his hands on the piano keys while I was playing and continued to do so even after I asked him to stop.
“He then proceeded to reach over the piano and try and take pictures, completely disrupting the performance."
Tonight’s 90th Academy Awards takes place in the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles where some of the biggest names in the entertainment will find out if they’ve won one of the coveted gongs.
But even if they don’t win, those lucky enough to attend the star studded ceremony will be walking away with an incredible gift bag, worth over £100,000.
Jimmy Kimmel is returning to host the ceremony and has already poked fun at the mix up that saw La La Land being named the Best Picture winner over Moonlight.
He said before the start of the show he’s now prepared for anything that could happen on the night.
Jimmy explained: “Everything everyone says gets attacked at all times. This is our new reality.
“I see a future of great silence… you carry on, and you have to realise what sometimes seems like an uproar is really four people tweeting. You also have to acknowledge that almost every subject is going to upset someone.”

This year’s major award shows have been dominated by the Times Up and #MeToo campaign and it will be prominent on the red carpet and inside the ceremony.
While the organisers have said that a black dress code is optional, many of the stars attending the ceremony will wear a pin to show their solidarity with survivors.
It’s also believed a segment of tonight’s show will pay tribute to those who bravely spoke out in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal that rocked Hollywood.
