Coronation Street, EastEnders and Emmerdale fans can now get a degree in soap – and it’s backed by famous faces
CORONATION Street, Emmerdale and EastEnders fans are now able to get a degree in soap thanks to a new course.
Soap fans will be able to study how their favourite shows are made at university and the course even has its own Coronation Street-style outdoor set.
The University of Central Lancashire's will launch in September 2018 and will be completed in two rather than three to help reduce student debt.
For the course, the university has even built a street with pub and newsagent – just like’s Corrie’s Rovers Return and Kabin.
As well as that, there are also interior sets of houses, shops and the pub, plus state-of-the-art control rooms and editing suites.
The degree – backed by Street stars Jennie McAlpine and John Thomson – will give students the chance to gain work experience on soaps like Corrie, Emmerdale and EastEnders.
Cold Feet star John, who played Jesse Chadwick on Corrie for two years, said: “This is an exciting and innovative course that will give students a real-world experience.
“It will focus on creating the next generation of producers, directors, sounds engineers, editors, writers and camera operators, giving them the practical skills and training they need to stand out in a very competitive industry.”
And Jennie, who plays Coronation Street's Fiz Brown, helped launch the course with a Q&A for prospective students.
She told them that the behind-the-scenes teams and camera crews on Corrie were treated like part of the family.

Dr Andrew Ireland, executive dean of the faculty of culture and the creative industries at the Preston-based university, said: “We have shaped this course specifically with the needs of prospective students and future employers.
“It’s essentially about training students with the practical skills they can transfer to industry.
“We have worked closely with contacts in the industry to shape the content and we are proud to be offering a course which is both flexible and tailored to the skills required.”
