Paul McCartney remembers best friend John Lennon as he joins March For Our Lives demonstration in New York

SIR Paul McCartney remembered his former Beatles bandmate John Lennon today as he joined one of the March For Our Lives demonstrations in New York City.

During the march, the 75-year-old said: "One of my best friends was killed right round here, so it's important to me."

Sir Paul stood in solidarity with other protesters, including his wife Nancy Shevell, at the anti-gun rally and reminded the world of his own experience with gun violence.

When a CNN reporter asked him what he hopes he can accomplish from the march, Sir Paul pointed at his T-shirt which read: WE CAN END GUN VIOLENCE.

He said: "I don't know [if it can happen at a legislative level] but this is what we can do,

"So I'm here to do it."

He added: "One of my best friends was killed in gun violence right round here,

"So it's important to me."

Sir Paul was referring to his Beatles bandmate John Lennon, who was gunned down outside his apartment in New York on December, 8, 1980.

The protest today was held at 72nd Street between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West, within eye shot of John Lennon's old building and Strawberry Fields, the Central Park tribute created for Lennon after his death.

Sir Paul was joined by a force of other celebrities who turned up at March For Our Lives demonstrations across America on Saturday.

Taking to Instagram, Selena Gomez wrote: "Protect kids, not guns! #MarchForOurLives".

Demi Lovato added on Twitter: "Today is the day, let your voices be heard #marchforourlives".

While Miley Cyrus shared several pictures from the march, saying: "Millennials taking over! #MarchForOurLives".

Posting on Twitter, she said: "So ready to March today! Landed in DC w North & Kayne.

"We stand in solidarity with the survivors of gun violence & students who are calling for action on common sense gun safety laws around the country."
