GREG'S HELLATHLON

Greg James reveals he thought he was going to die at the end of his Gregathlon Sports Relief challenge

RADIO 1 DJ Greg James “genuinely thought” he was going to die at the end of his Gregathlon Sports Relief challenge.

The presenter spoke about the event which he was forced to revisit, after the Beast From The East meant it was too dangerous for the team to scale Ben Nevis first time round.

The challenge saw Greg  – who has raised over £1million for his heroic efforts – pedal across the country and then climb the UK’s highest mountains, Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis to raise awareness for mental health.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun Online at the series two launch of Sounds Like Friday Night, Greg said: “The last 600 metres of that mountain, I will never ever do that again. I was terrified. I genuinely thought I was going to die.

“There was a moment where all the mountaineers were blown over by a seventy mile per hour gust and all you looked down on was an icy ridge to nothing.

“I was like I shouldn't be out here. I'm not trained for this.”

During the campaign, the star received support from celebrities, including The Rock and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, who donned a blonde wig for his support video.

Speaking about his decision to continue the mammoth task, he added: “I underestimated it a little bit. And thought we'll finish it. It'll be great.

“Everyone’s like 'Yeah, keep doing it' so I went back and about forty miles into the cycle ride I went 'Oh f***, I've really, really not thought this through' because I had to do a hundred and eighty miles more on the bike and then go up Ben Nevis.

“And it was honestly the worst thing I've ever done.”

It was today revealed Greg will have Fridays off from presenting his Radio 1 drive time show.

However, he will continue to present music show Sounds Like Friday Night.

Co-host Dotty added: “Sounds Like Friday Night could have been just me.”

The first episode of the second series, which aired last Friday, saw Little Mix sing in Japanese and Gary Barlow attempt to sing a gig in a minute, alongside live performances from Snow Patrol, Years and Years and Halsey.

This week’s episode will include performances from James Bay and 5 Seconds of Summer.
