The Island With Bear Grylls contestants shocked by how skinny they look as they see reflections for first time in five weeks after their stomachs ‘eat themselves’
The residents of the island were surprised to see how much they'd changed after they struggled to find food and eat during their time on the show
THE Island With Bear Grylls campmates were left shocked after leaving camp during tonight’s episode when they saw their reflection for the first time in five weeks and discovered how much weight they’d lost.
The Channel 4 series ended tonight and saw a number of people marooned on an island as they fought to survive and be self sufficient.
But the tough environment meant it was difficult for them to live comfortably, especially as they struggled to find food.
Divided into two groups, they would share fruit and vegetables when they found them but were not so happy to exchange protein and meat, with one of the contestants saying earlier in the series: “We are starving, our bodies are eating themselves.”
After leaving the island they were treated to a proper meal and all sat round a table and looked ecstatic as they tasted good food for the first time in more than a month, with one person exclaiming: “I could cry, this is better than winning the lottery.”
They were then taken to a hotel and some went straight to the mirror to see if their appearance had changed.
Doctor James Gill exclaimed: “I look like a convict!”
Gynaecologist Ali Brookes shouted: “There’s nothing there!” as she held up her arms whilst wearing a black bikini.
Gibraltar-based doctor Shereen also appeared surprised but was soon distracted by the comfortable bed in her hotel room.
Food was a much talked about topic on the island and the contestants went to great lengths in a bid to find something to eat.
Host Bear Grylls explained how they had built a raft in a bid to travel to a neighbouring island to see if they could bring back anything for a good meal.
He said: “The food situation became so dire, the wealthy group rolled the dice to raft to the next island.
“The mission went from risky to downright dangerous.”
The raft was then shown in pieces after if broke up and washed ashore.
However, the group would not be deterred and they built a stronger vessel and travelled to the island next door where they “got high” on the sugar from a number of pineapples they found.
Speaking about the ravishing hunger earlier in the series, contestant Ben said: “I’m struggling to do a water run, I Just feel weak.
“Your stomach just doesn’t feel starving. It just starts dying.”
They were reduced to eating food they did not like at all and at one point ate vomit fruit.
James said: “I’ve never eaten s**t but that’s what I imagine s**t would taste like.”
On their attempts at trying to find food, Shereen explained they often encountered difficulties, especially with fishing.
She said: “We all tried our hand at fishing. It was awful!
“Net fishing, we thought excellent this is going to work, then nothing”
