The Strangers: Prey at Night is an almost fun slasher flick but lacks any imagination
A family of four on a road trip take a fatal detour into a caravan park where there are some strangers who try to kill them
INSPIRED by the 2008 smash hit ‘The Strangers’ (but not necessarily adhered to), this tells us the story of a bickering family of four on a road trip who take a detour to a relatives caravan park for a stop off.
Whilst there, some strangers who try to kill them all. Et voila.
It’s a pretty thin, kinda almost nearly fun slasher flick, which at it’s best thankfully gets the hell on with it (it’s a joyously short 88 mins), but at it’s worst doesn’t give you any reason for it’s existence.
The teenage son looks about 36, people become immediately stupid the second they encounter danger, they clearly could only get Christina Hendricks for a couple of days filming and there’s zero attempt at any form of plot or substance.
Apart from that it’s OK. I'm joking of course, it really isn’t.
You could excuse all that, were it scary - but the fundamental problem here is that the “strangers” are about as scary as Harry Hill.
MOST READ IN FILM
Its far too reliant on cliche and tired tropes (has anyone in real life ever dragged an axe along the floor in any other scenario other than a horror film?) and just gets plain dumb (The strangers destroy all the mobile phones, but leave them with a working car. UWOTM8?).
I can see it’s just meant to be a bit of harmless(!) fun, but I just found it to be lacking in any form of imagination. The basic bitch of low-rent horror.
