The House That Jack Built sees Matt play a serial killer with more than 60 deaths to his name
UMA Thurman and Matt Dillon's new movie saw 100 audience members walk out after graphic scenes depicting child mutilation and murder.
The House That Jack Built sees Matt, 54 star as a serial killer called Jack who has 60 deaths to his name, and is directed by Lars von Trier.
Taking place over a 12-year period, Jack plots increasingly horrific ways to kill people, and one scene sees him take a rifle and blow the heads off two children.
That moment led many to walk out of the screening at the Cannes Film Festival, and a slew of movie critics to slam it on social media.
Showbiz 411's Roger Friedman was one of the critics to tweet his disgust, writing: "Walked out on LarsvonTrier. Vile movie. Should not have been made. Actors culpable."
New York Magazine's Kyle Buchanan added that many audience members were horrified by what they saw, writing: "He mutilates [actress] Riley Keough, he mutilates children...and we are all here in formal dress expected to watch it?"
Meanwhile the Oscar Predictor didn't hold back, sharing: "Just left Lars Von Trier's The House that Jack Built. Gross. Pretentious. Vomitive. Torturous. Pathetic."
Other critics acknowledged the content was grim, but that didn't stop them from raving about the film.
Charles Bramesco wrote: "THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT: where NYMPHOMANIAC posited getting f***ed as futile existential soul-searching, this one pins its central metaphor on murder. A sick film from a sick man, and of course it's amazing."
While David Ehrlich said: "THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT: another trip through the abattoir of Lars von Trier’s anxieties, this one a damning self-critique of / backhanded apology for the compulsive violence of artistic creation. the ending is a scorcher. very sorry to say that I loved this. #Cannes2018."
As well as blowing the two children's heads off in one horrifying scene, Jack also slices the breasts off Riley's character.
Uma, 48, is one of the first to be killed, playing a woman who gets a lift from Jack after he picks her up from the side of the road.
Variety's Ramin Setoodah stayed until the end but described it as "the worst movie of the year" and "one of the most unpleasant movie-going experiences of my life".
However he did note that the film still received a six-minute standing ovation from the movie goers who had managed to stay until the end.
While Matt attended the premiere in Cannes alongside the controversial director, Uma and Riley, 28, were absent from proceedings.
The publicity from the walkout has certainly piqued the interest of many film fans, with some declaring the film is now at the top of their must-see lists.
Those excited about seeing the film wrote on Twitter: "The house that jack built looks and sounds like it could easily be one of the best movies of this year.
"I can’t wait until The House Jack Built goes to theaters or to whatever. People might actually boycott that movie but who cares?
"Lars von trier is the Director of Antichrist and Nyphomaniac, which I consider to be a masterpiece. So of course his film about a serial killer, The House That Jack Built, will be controversial. His films are brilliant and insane."
