Charlotte Rae Lubotsky was an American actress, comedian, singer and dancer born in Wisconsin on April 22, 1926.
She was best known for playing Edna Garrett in Diff'rent Strokes and its spin-off The Facts of Life.
As well as her work with the subsequent The Facts of Life TV movies, she provided the voice for Nanny in 101 Dalmatians: The Series.
More recently the actress starred in 2015's Ricki and the Flash alongside Meryl Streep.
Charlotte was married to composer John Strauss from 1951 to 1976 when he revealed he was bisexual.
The couple shared two sons - Andrew and Larry - who helped her write her 2015 autobiography The Facts of my Life.
At a screening in 2009 Charlotte was diagnosed early with pancreatic cancer but made a full recovery six months later.
But in 2017 she was diagnosed with bone cancer at the age of 91.
After battling with the disease the actress died at her home in Los Angeles on August 5, 2018, aged 92
Charlotte played housekeeper Edna Garrett.
Edna looked after the Drummond family in New York after Willis and Arnold's mum Lucy died.
The character was so loved that she was given her own spin-off - The Facts of Life.
The Facts of Life ran from 1979-1988 and saw Edna take on the role of housemother in a boarding school.
