DENISE Welch revealed she had a breakdown at the start of the year during an emotional interview on the Lorraine Show this morning.
The 60-year-old has previously spoken candidly about her battle with depression and her struggle with her mental health.
Denise quit alcohol in 2012 and overcame an eating addition which transformed her lifestyle.
Although it has helped her in some ways, Denise told Christine Lampard she has learned to cope with her illness as best she can.
Denise explained: “I had a breakdown at the beginning of this year, I had sporadic episodes, but depression isn't always bought on by circumstance.
“I was sitting on a beach in Grenada with my husband and I felt my illness coming on me, it's like all the colour disappears from your world.
“I was in a very bad place, but I refer to it as an unwelcome visitor, he will always leave.
“It's a battle he'll never win because we have control. I live a much healthier life so I can fight it full-on. At 60 I've learned to look after myself.”
Since turning 60, Denise said she’s now focused on taking the best care of herself.
“In 2013 when I gave up alcohol, I started to develop an eating addiction and so I had to address that.
“I did a plan of eating that I stick to today. I have no aspiration to be a size 8, I'm a healthy size 12, at 60 I feel good.”
Denise has previously spoken about her decision to go sober and said the turning point was the day she drunkenly smashed up her flat.
She has now written a new novel and is starring in Calendar Girls the musical.
