Chris Evans backs ‘firm favourite’ Sara Cox to replace him as host on Radio 2 Breakfast Show
CHRIS Evans backed Sara Cox to replace him when he quits the BBC to return to Virgin Radio.
Chris, 52, who earns £1.7million a year hosting the Radio 2 Breakfast Show, told his eight million listeners: “I know my money’s on Sara.”
On Monday the DJ revealed that, after eight years, he will be leaving his BBC job in December — sparking a flurry of speculation over his replacement.
But Chris said his regular stand-in Sara — who currently has a regular nightly slot — was perfect to front the UK’s most listened-to radio show.
He said: “Why the heck not? She’s the regular sub, she’s a super sub, she’s the regular deputy.
“Look, everybody here loves Sara. We all love Sara, she’s lovely to work with. We all adore her.
“And we know the listeners love her, you tell us, you tell me out on the street, you tell other people that work on the show and around the show.”
Chris also shot down claims he had fallen out with the BBC over pay issues, adding: “It’s nothing to do with money, there is no rift here.”

He also encouraged listeners to join him when he moves to his new home on Virgin early next year — revealing that many people mistakenly thought he would be quitting the airwaves completely.
He explained: “Lots of people in the street saying yesterday, ‘So sorry you’re leaving the radio in the mornings’. And I said ‘Thanks very much, but I’m not actually leaving the radio in the mornings’ because that’s the bit we didn’t mention yesterday, I will still be on just somewhere else, okay.” The BBC has yet to confirm Evans’ replacement.
