War film buffs will enjoy Hurricane – but it’s not for everyone

THIS is, to all intents and purposes a pretty average WWII film, which will still appeal to war film buffs, but won’t do much to appeal to a wider circle.

Where it attempts to differ is in it’s storytelling from the perspective of pilot Jan Zumbach (Iwan Rheon) and his Polish squadron who, exiled from their decimated homeland yet regarded as immensely talented pilots, join the RAF to aid what is ultimately a futile attempt to claw back their country.

Underneath the gossamer thin veneer of dogfights and corridor fumbles with the girls lies an attempt to highlight xenophobia (This bloody Poles coming over and nicking our jobs) that still, just in case the obvious message hadn’t got through, exists today.

I enjoyed the performances from Iwan Rheon and Stefanie Martini, but extraordinarily clunky CGI and the reliance on the old “I’ll translate this crazy Englishman as saying something humorous” got tiring quite quickly.
