New James Bond director Cary Fukunaga admits it would be ‘cool’ to have Idris Elba as 007
Cary Fukunaga, the surprise choice to helm the 25th James Bond movie, said it would be 'pretty cool' to have the Luther star on-board
THE new James Bond director has dropped a huge hint Idris Elba could be 007 in the future.
Cary Fukunaga, the surprise choice to helm the 25th James Bond movie, said it would be “pretty cool” to have the Luther star as the super agent.
He even has experience directing Idris in the 2015 film Beasts of No Nation.
Cary said: “That would be pretty cool to have Idris and I do a Bond film together.”
“He can drive cars really well, he’s a gear-head, and he can do the action.
“If they wanted him to play Bond, he could do it.”
The director’s comments have seen the odds on Idris taking the role slashed to 2/1 by bookies.
But he will have to wait at least two years for his chance to play Bond – with Daniel Craig lined up to star in Bond 25.
Idris, 46, has long been linked with the role, and has stoked speculation with a series of cryptic tweets.
Bond producer Barbara Broccoli sparked controversy when a leaked email revealed she said “it’s time” for a black 007.
The next film’s release date has been pushed back to Valentine’s Day 2020 after Trainspotting director Danny Boyle dropped out over creative differences.
American director Cary is perhaps best known for his work on US crime shoe True Detective.
At 41, he will be one of the youngest Bond directors in his 55 years as a cinematic icon.
He has already been tipped to do away with some outdated Bond cliches – including the sexy Bond girls like Ursula Andress and Halle Berry.
His latest project, the Netflix series Maniac, persuaded Oscar-winner Emma Stone to swap the silver screen for the TV screen.
