GREAT British Bake Off viewers were left in tears last night as Terry Hartill broke down about wife's death.
The baker opened up about the love of his life in his exit interview after leaving the tent in Spice Week.
A tearful Terry admitted the Channel 4 show had played a big part in helping him with his grief.
He said: "I said I wouldn't get upset.
"It's funny when you're on your own... my wife and I were very happy and that was a massive loss.
"There wasn't anything to fill the void for a very long time so it's given me a focus.
"I've met some lovely people I'm sure we'll keep in touch for a very long time.
"It's been a big help and something I'll remember for a long time.
"I won't stop baking. I'm very much looking forward to more projects carried out in a bigger time frame."
Fans tweeted their support for Terry, even suggesting he should stay on as a mascot.
One said: "Think I just heard the nations heart shatter into pieces simultaneously hearing Terry talk about loosing his wife on #GBBO."
Another added: "Terry baking to fill the void of losing his wife has broken me and I didn’t realise I could get this emotional over a cooking show. #GBBO."
Someone else said: "Genuinely in tears over Terry’s little post elimination interview. “Filled the void” oh Terry, oh my darling, please be okay ❤️😢 #GBBO."
Another suggested: "Terry should just be allowed back as a mascot...They can’t leave him that way! #SpiceWeek #GBBO."
After it was announced Terry wouldn't be continuing in the competition, Paul Hollywood told him: "You've done really well mate."
Last night's show saw bakers take on the challenge of making a family-sized ginger cake for their signature bake, a delicate middle eastern pastry for the technical bake and a spiced biscuit chandelier for the showstopper challenge.
