What horror movies are based on true stories? From The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to The Exorcist and Psycho

Here are the scariest films of all time that we know are based on real events...

VERY few people can claim to be unaffected by any horror films, especially after finding out the flick you just watched is based on true events.

What makes a movie scarier is knowing that somebody actually went through the terror you're experiencing a taste of - here are a few examples...

The Exorcist (1973)

Based on the real life of a boy named Roland Doe who was possessed by demons in 1949.

The exorcism is so scary there have been books written on the people who watched it and collapsed in fear.

Some cinemas across the US provided moviegoers with bags in case they vomited from fear.

The story itself will give you goosebumps from knowing and wondering what hell Roland Doe was dragged through.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Loosely based on America's infamous serial killer Ed Gein, the film depicts the gruesome collection of Gein's skin masks.

At the time of his arrest, Gein was found to have nine human skin masks in his possession.

The Amityville Horror (2005)

In 1975 at 112, Ocean Avenue, Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his parents and four siblings with an assault rifle.

DeFeo told detectives after confessing to the murders: "Once I started, I just couldn't stop. It wen't so fast."

The episode instantly became one of the most harrowing mass murders in American history and was the basis of a book that documented a new family moving into the house.

Many supernatural happenings terrorised the new Lutz family who moved in, events that writer Jay Anson claims were real.

The 2005 version is considered by many to be the scariest.

Psycho (1960)

The thriller-horror is loosely inspired by Ed Gein's crimes and various Wisconsin murders.

The Conjuring (2013)

Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren claim the case depicted in The Conjuring was exceptionally hard for them to deal with.

Wolf Creek (2005)

Loosely based on two men, Ivan Milat and Bradley John Murdoch and the backpacker murders that took place in Australia that included the killings of two Brits.

The film hit the headlines for its brutal depiction of torture.
