Major Coronation Street character will be killed off next year when the roof of knicker factory Underworld collapses
The roof of the kicker factory, owned by Carla Connor, will be sabotaged by a new villain
ONE of Coronation Street’s major characters will be killed off when the knicker factory roof collapses.
The legendary building, called Underworld, is owned by long-time Cobbles resident Carla Connor, played by Alison King.
But in a storyline to air in March, at least one big name will die after the roof is sabotaged by a villain.
Show boss Iain Macleod said the scenes were “heartbreaking”.
He added: “It’s a colossal big stunt.
"It will at first appear to be an accident.
"It will then be revealed that it was a criminal enterprise that caused it to collapse.
“And someone will be dying in said collapse. This is the beginning of the next generation of a Corrie bad guy.
"The factory collapse will be the start of that.”
Iain, whose first episode of the long-running programme aired last week, added: “The death is really heartbreaking.
"There won’t be a dry eye in the house.
“We thought restricting the body count was a good thing and making it somebody we care about and the death we cared about at that point in their story.”
The undies factory has been struck by several tragedies since the premises were bought by Mike Baldwin back in 1998.
He died on its steps in 2006, in the arms of Ken Barlow.

Former factory boss Paul Connor, married to current owner Carla, died in a car crash a year later.
Paul’s brother Liam was murdered by new chief Tony Gordon, who was then engaged to Carla.
He later burned down the premises with her in it, but she escaped.
