THE Inbetweeners will go down as one of the funniest comedies the UK has ever produced.
But it has been revealed some not so laugh-out-loud moments could have dramatically changed the fortunes of the show — including two of its stars nearly being killed during filming.
James Buckley, who played sex-pest boaster Jay Cartwright, was inches away from setting off a flare in his own face during the infamous Field Trip episode.
The scary near-miss happened after he struggled to understand the producers’ instructions for using a flare gun while he was stranded on a boat with co-stars Blake Harrison, Joe Thomas and Simon Bird.
Blake revealed: “He genuinely could have died.
“He looked down the barrel of it before it goes off and we were told don’t ever do that because if it goes off, it has the force of a grenade.
“So when James does that and half a second later it comes out, that’s how close we were to recasting.”
Jay’s on-screen dad Terry, played by David Schaal, also risked his life filming the classic Caravan Club episode.
After shooting scenes all day in the freezing campsite washroom with barely any clothes on, the effects were nearly fatal on the drive home.
On Channel 4’s The Inbetweeners: Fwends Reunited special — airing on New Year’s Day at 9pm and hosted by comic Jimmy Carr — David explains: “I had to get half-naked, it was freezing cold and I had to p*** and fart though the whole scene while my c**k was shrivelled to the size of an acorn.
“It was so cold I had a car crash on the way home because I went hot, cold, hot, cold and I fell asleep at the wheel.”
He also claimed two people were seriously injured as a result.
Fellow Inbetweeners’ parent Belinda, aka Will’s sexy mum, also makes a return in the Inbetweeners special alongside some other familiar faces, including Vladimir Consigny, the French exchange student Patrice, and Abbey Mordue, who played Will’s incredibly tall date in one episode.
Belinda Stewart-Wilson reveals how awkward it was playing the role which turned her into the most famous hot mum in the UK.
She explained: “I’ll be honest, sitting in the read throughs in front of many, many people and listening to four age- inappropriate boys talking with unswerving regularity about my vagina — it was uncomfortable.”
I can see why.
GIGI Hadid isn’t blue over rumours she’s split from boyfriend Zayn Malik.
The model was bright and breezy in yellow alongside sister Bella in New York on Saturday.
Gigi, who actually spent Christmas with Zayn, was on a family trip to toy store FAO Schwarz. Clearly they didn’t mind who spotted them.
Caroline Flack endured a hard year with the end of her engagement to Andrew Brady – and she has now revealed she was “dying inside” during her toughest days.
The Love Island host looked back at 2018 by posting her top nine photos on Instagram, but it was her caption that caught the attention of her 1.9million followers.
She said: “My top 9. Funny isn’t it? I look so happy except I know in 4 of those pictures I was dying inside.
“I’ve learned many lessons this year, mostly that everything is temporary, moments, feelings, people, flowers and also that having a puppy is bloody hard work.”
Caroline – who can be seen in one of the snaps holding dog Ruby that she shared with Andrew – was left heartbroken after she finally kicked the ex-Apprentice star to the curb following a series of explosive rows.
Returning to the present, Caroline posted this revealing snap from her dressing room at London’s Phoenix Theatre, where she is currently playing Roxie Hart in West End musical Chicago.
It’s onwards and upwards for Caroline in 2019.
SAM Smith won four Grammys for his debut album about unrequited love and there could be another hit from his latest heartbreak.
He has written an emotional song about the collapse of his relationship with 13 Reasons Why actor Brandon Flynn, six months after they split up.
The singer took to social media to tease the release of his track Dancing With A Stranger, with former Fifth Harmony member , which features lyrics about not wanting to be on your own after a break-up.
Lines from the song include: “It’s pretty clear that I’m not over you, I’m still thinking ’bout the things you do, so I don’t want to be alone tonight.”
Sam and Brandon dated for nine months after meeting in 2017. I revealed their romance had ended in June.
Sam and Normani were in the studio together in early August.
They are both expected to release albums next year, with Normani also working with Calvin Harris and Pharrell Williams.
She’s certainly managed to get in with the right crowd.
KENDALL Jenner’s dedication to posing in a bikini is snow joke.
The model went out in a barely there bikini while on holiday in ski mecca Aspen, Colorado, where temperatures yesterday plunged as low as -11C.
She might want to pack a jumper next time. Then again . . .
FROM massive stadium tours, love splits and fights (there was even a row where Nicki Minaj had a shoe chucked at her by Cardi B), celebrities have kept me well and truly in business throughout 2018.
I’ve had the job of writing about the most shocking, emotional and scandalous showbiz tales right here in Bizarre.
But which stars have dominated these pages with their red carpet antics and record-breaking achievements?
Well, I’ve done the maths to calculate who’s scored the most column inches over the year.
So, find out who’s up and who’s down in the fifth annual Biz List...
10. (new entry) CAROLINE Flack was on, off, on, off and . . . oh, even I could barely keep up with her see-sawing relationship with reality star Andrew Brady.
But according to the TV presenter and Strictly favourite, the pair have now called off their engagement for good – which sounds like a positive move to me.
9. (down from #7) TAYLOR Swift completed her 53-date Reputation Stadium tour, despite disappointing ticket sales at her UK shows.
And as one of the world’s most talked-about stars, she was unable to keep a low profile and was exposed for sneaking around in secret inside huge suitcases to avoid photographers.
8. (up from #10) ROBBIE Williams won over the hearts of the nation once again as a judge on The X Factor this year, alongside wife Ayda.
But the really dazzling moment was the Robster’s reunification with his old band Take That for the final. Robbie and Ayda also had a surprise third baby by surrogate – a daughter they named Coco.
7. (new entry) SPICE Girls announced their long-awaited comeback after what felt like an eternity of uncertainty. Then there was all the squabbling over who would be involved and what they would do.
But we’re sure to hear more from them, and I reckon they’ll be on this list in 2019 after their huge tour.
6. (up from #8) LIAM Payne kept me and plenty of millions others highly amused with his hilarious quotes (does he really think he could be James Bond?!), and questionable music.
His split from Cheryl dominated headlines too. Hopefully Liam will be in this column for more impressive reasons next year.
5. (down from #1) ED Sheeran sold almost five million tickets for his Divide tour and kept everyone guessing about whether he really had got married to his childhood sweetheart Cherry Seaborn.
Aside from his own music, he penned tunes for Little Mix, Boyzone and Jess Glynne.
4. (new entry) Dua Lipa cast herself as the future of British pop, becoming a global star and scooping two Brit Awards in the process.
The singer also kept fans entertained with her goings-on both on and off stage, splitting with singer Paul Klein and rekindling her romance with chef Isaac Carew.
3. (re-entry) LITTLE Mix proved their staying power with the release of fifth album LM5, even though it was hampered by their surprise move from record label Syco to RCA.
Jesy Nelson found herself single again, but Perrie Edwards, Jade Thirwa and Leigh-Anne Pinnock are all loved up.
2. (new entry) CHERYL Tweedy had taken a break from showbiz but her return was written about for all the wrong reasons.
She split from Liam Payne, her comeback single Love Made Me Do It flopped in the charts and she was accused of being a diva. She’ll be looking forward to a new start.
1.(up from #2) RITA Ora finally released her second album Phoenix, split from her producer boyfriend Andrew Watt and found love again with Hollywood star Andrew Garfield.
She also gave us plenty to look at with her habit of posting incredible snaps of her fine self online. Tipped for Brit Award success in February, she’s certainly worked hard for it.
DWAYNE Johnson bought his mum Ata a house for Christmas. The actor said on Instagram: “I told her it’s Willy Wonka’s Golden Ticket, because she gets to choose any home she wants, anywhere she wants.”
